Status Quo

Status Quo is a British rock band formed in 1962 by Alan Lancaster and Francis Rossi.

Status Quo, also known as "The Quo" or simply "Quo", is an English rock band whose music is characterized by a strong boogie and boogie-woogie style. The group's roots lie with "The Specters", founded by high school students Francis Rossi and Alan Lancaster in 1962. After several lineup changes, the band became "The Status Quo" in late 1967, eventually becoming "Status Quo" in 1970. The band has had over 60 hits in the UK, more than any other rock band. 22 singles reached the top ten in the UK.

The band started out in the early 1960s as the beat group "The Specters" (not to be confused with the Australian group The Specters). Around 1967 the band members discovered psychedelic rock and changed their name to "Traffic" and not much later to "Traffic Jam" (to avoid confusion with Steve Winwood's band "Traffic". At the end of that year they attracted Rick Parfitt and called themselves "Status Quo". After a short psychedelic period with some big hits, such as "Pictures of Matchstick Men", "Black Veils of Melancholy" and "Ice in the Sun", Quo changed his style with the album "Dog of two head". Gradually, with the albums "Piledriver" and "Hello!" reached a wide audience in the early 1970s. The band developed its own distinctive style of few chords, easy lyrics and a solid rhythm. The band scored big hits worldwide with, among others, "Mean Girl", "Paper Plane", "Caroline", "Down Down", "Break the Rules", "Whatever You Want", "Rockin All Over the World", "The Wanderer" and "In the army now", but never broke through in the US. The band had their biggest hit in 1975 with the live version of "Roll over lay down", from the album "Hello!" (1973).

The year 1982 was dominated by Status Quo's twentieth anniversary. The band released an album titled: "1+9+8+2" (the sum of the numbers is 20). Drummer John Coghlan left the band during the recording of this album and was replaced by Pete Kircher. Andy Bown also became an official member of Status Quo. Bown had already worked intensively with the band for several years. On May 14, 1982, Status Quo played in the NEC in Birmingham. Among the 11,000-strong audience was the princely couple Charles and Diana. A portion of this concert was released later that year on an album entitled "Live At The NEC".

In 1984 the band decided to stop touring. Once more a large-scale world tour was undertaken: the "The End Of The Road Tour". This ended with a final performance in Milton Keynes. Bassist Alan Lancaster left Status Quo and settled in Australia. Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt collaborated on the "Band Aid" single "Do They Know It's Christmas" in 1984. This song, which became a number 1 hit worldwide, was recorded to raise money for the gigantic famine in Africa.

Alan Lancaster returned once more when Status Quo opened "Live Aid" in 1985 with "Rocking all over the world". This concert was a follow-up to the "Band Aid" collection and was played on two stages, Wembley Stadium London and JFK Stadium Philadelphia. Although this performance was mainly criticized in advance in the media, the band got the 72,000-strong audience singing and dancing along. In retrospect, the skeptics admitted they were wrong: the opening had turned out to be a sublime move by Bob Geldof. The atmosphere was unparalleled from the first song.

In April 1986, after some legal wrangling with Alan Lancaster over the Status Quo name, Parfitt and Rossi decided to tour again, this time accompanied by John 'Rhino' Edwards on bass, Jeff Rich on drums and Andy Bown on keyboards. In August of that year a new album was released: "In The Army Now". The title track was a cover of the Dutch duo: Bolland and Bolland. This song was released as a single and the band scored one of their biggest hits with it.

Alan Lancaster gave the Status Quo repertoire an Australian sequel with his "Lancaster Bombers". John Coghlan also remained active with the old Status Quo repertoire.

After several albums, Status Quo released "Heavy Traffic" in 2002. By now drummer Jeff Rich had left and he was replaced by Matt Letley. With this new album, Status Quo went back to the early seventies with solid and uncomplicated rock.

"Heavy Traffic" was followed in 2003 by a cover album called "Riffs". This included not only covers, but also re-recorded classics such as "Caroline", "Whatever you want", "Down the dustpipe" and "Rockin' all over the world".

On September 19, 2005, the band released another album: "The Party Ain't Over Yet". The release of this album was accompanied by a world tour. In addition, 2005 celebrated the fact that Francis Rossi and Rick Parfitt had met each other forty years earlier. The tour was interrupted in December 2005 due to Rick Parfitt's health problems. He was initially suspected of having throat cancer, but that turned out not to be the case.

On November 6, 2006 the first official live DVD was released: "Just Doin' It" This contained recordings of the concert that Status Quo gave in May 2006 at the NEC in Birmingham. British music magazine NME named Status Quo the most successful British band ever in 2006, having scored more chart hits (61) than any other British band.

On July 1, 2007, the band played the song "Rockin' All Over The World" during the "Concert for Diana" at Wembley Stadium. Status Quo's 33rd album was released on September 17, 2007 and was titled "In Search of the Fourth Chord", a name that referred to the fact that Status Quo was regularly accused of using only three chords.

In September 2008 the band, together with the German band "Scooter", released a Techno version of "Whatever you want". At the beginning of December of that year, the band released its first Christmas single ever: 'It's Christmas Time'.

In February 2010, Rick and Francis were named OBE [Order of the British Empire] in England for their contribution to pop music and charitable work.

In 2011 the new CD "Quid Pro Quo" was released. The CD consists of new songs that are reminiscent of earlier times.

In September 2012, a new documentary, "Hello Quo", by Alan G Parker was released. Former members of the "Frantic Four", Alan Lancaster and John Coghlan, contributed to this. Lancaster and Coghlan also co-starred with Parfitt and Rossi on a nine-concert UK tour in March 2013. In 2013, a real feature film starring Parfitt and Rossi, "Bula Quo", directed by Stuart St. Paul. It's an action comedy. There will be a soundtrack with re-recorded hits and some new songs.

De band scoorde wereldwijd grote hits met onder andere "Mean Girl", "Paper Plane", "Caroline", "Down down", "Break the Rules", "Whatever you want", "Rockin all over the world", "The Wanderer" en "In the army now", maar brak nooit door in de VS.

At The N.E.C.".

The End Of The Road Tour". Francis Rossi en Rick Parfitt werkten in 1984 mee aan de "Band Aid"single "Do they know it's Christmas".

Alan Lancaster kwam nog eenmaal terug toen Status Quo in 1985 "Live Aid" opende met "Rocking all over the world".

Hierop waren niet alleen covers te beluisteren, maar ook opnieuw opgenomen klassiekers als "Caroline", "Whatever you want", "Down the dustpipe" en "Rockin' all over the world".
