Uriah Heep has been around since 1969. The composition has changed several times. Characteristic are the polyphonic backing vocals and influences of progressive rock, hard rock, heavy metal, jazz and even country.
Uriah Heep is named after the villain in Charles Dickens ' novel David Copperfield .

In December 1969, Gerry Bron, producer and owner of Bronze Records, sent a group called Spice into his studio. This group was founded by Box and Byron (pseudonym of David Garrick). At Bron's urging, bassist Paul Newton asked Hensley to join the group. In the meantime, the name had been changed to Uriah Heep .

The debut album, Very 'Eavy... Very 'Umble (1970) introduced a mixture of hard organ and guitar sounds, with Byron's theatrical voice topping it all. The typical choral singing was also present. The single Gypsy became a regular part of the UH repertoire. The record sold poorly, but the review in the American pop magazine "Rolling Stone" is still infamous: "If this band is gonna make it I'll have to commit suicide."

Salisbury 's second album (late 1970s, early 1971) was more of the progressive rock genre, with a 16-minute title track featuring 24 woodwinds. This album also did not sell very well, but Lady in Black would become a big hit in Germany a few years later. From this album, Hensley was the main composer of the group.

The big breakthrough came with Look at Yourself (1971), whose title song and especially July Morning became rock classics. On this keyboardist Manfred Mann played a remarkable solo without ever meeting the band. Producer Bron got more and more to say. That led to conflicts with Newton's father, who was the group's manager. At the end of 1971 father and son Newton left.

The first replacement Mark Clarke stayed just long enough to co-write and record the next classic with Hensley: The Wizard . The high notes in the chorus are his. But with heroin-addicted New Zealander Gary Thain and power drummer Lee Kerslake, Uriah Heep finally had a stable line-up. The five had their global breakthrough with Demons and Wizards (1972). The hit single Easy Livin' was released twice and became a chart-topper in 1973. Wanting to capitalize on the worldwide success as quickly as possible, Bron sent the band back into his studio just a few months later. The Magicians Birthday (1972) partly built on the success formula. Fans' opinions are divided, some find the album unbalanced and too hasty, others think it is superior to its predecessor.

The albums continued to be released at a rapid pace. Following other rock groups, Uriah Heep released Live 1973 (January 1973). The live album contained a gatefold cover with a photo album, which had not been shown until then. With this album, the name as a hard rock topper was definitively established.

The speed at which the main composer of the band Hensley composed remained very high. Successor Sweet Freedom (1973) was recorded in France. This album best approached the live sound. The single became Stealin . The single was banned in the US because of a compromising sentence. Otherwise, it would have been the band's first US hit single. More or less simultaneously, Hensley's first solo album was also released. Because he was assisted by Kerslake and Thain, the music is very close to that of Uriah Heep himself. In retrospect, the group should have combined the best of both albums. Because Sweet Freedom is also very changeable.

Wonderworld (early 1974) was shot in Munich. A pair of live recordings, Live at the King Biscuit Flower Hour 1974 and Live at Shepperton 1974 , were not released until years later. The latter contains six songs that do not appear on Live 1973 .

The classic lineup that had been together since Demons and Wizards began to show cracks. Box, Kerslake, Hensley, Byron and Thain is the lineup that has brought the best of Heep. When Thain received an electric shock in Dallas, the trouble started. He had to go to the hospital. When after some wrangling it became clear that Thain would not fully recover, he had to leave the band. He died of a heroin overdose in 1975. It was during this period that Uriah Heep enjoyed his greatest success.

Thain's successor was John Wetton, who proved his talents in "King Crimson". Return to Fantasy (1975) was recorded with him. The album was less extreme than its predecessors without breaking the typical Heep ingredients. On side two, the group experimented with other genres, such as country. The band toured around the world. The touring and recording started to take its toll. Box said the band was flown back from the US to London to record a song and then immediately boarded the plane for their next US gig. In 1975, Byron and Hensley each released a solo album.

For High and Mighty (1976), producer and manager Bron was sidelined. The guys did it all themselves. Box has described the album as too light. Weep in Silence is a ballad in the style that would make the "Scorpions" famous much later. Wetton's other contribution, Footprints in the Snow , is somewhat akin to The Wizard . Hensley's dominance as a composer is obvious on this album.

Uriah Heep is at Pinkpop that year, where it is struggling with many technical problems and arguments with the organization. It is also one of Byron's last concerts. A week later he is fired because he had made himself impossible in the eyes of the others. Byron was found dead in his home in February 1985, probably from excessive alcohol consumption.

Wetton leaves for "Wishbone Ash". Uriah Heep makes a fresh start, but at a difficult time. High and Mighty had rejected old fans without attracting new ones. While Uriah Heep tries to solve the internal problems, "The Sex Pistols" break through. The established rock legends are put aside in one fell swoop and henceforth counted among the dinosaurs. Three albums make this line-up: Firefly (1977), Innocent Victim (1978) and Fallen Angel (1979). There are great successes in Germany where Lady in Black , Free Me and Love or Nothing become big hits. Affected by drugs, Hensley decides to put Lawton on hold. In 1980 Conquest is released with John Sloman on vocals and Chris Slade on drums. Kerslake switches to Ozzy Osbourne. Many fans have already given up. The album certainly has creativity in it but too few "Heep Trademarks". Hensley then gives up. He is seen as the driving force behind the band, but also partly for its decline. The new bandleader is Box. He continues with the then present line-up supplemented with keyboardist Greg Deschert, but after the flopped single Think It Over , he disbands Uriah Heep . Neither Byron nor Hensley has been able to reach the same level without the band, any more than Box and Uriah Heep without these two key figures.

After a period of hefty daily drinks, Uriah Heep rises like a phoenix from its ashes and comes out Abominog in 1982. The lineup will then consist of Mick Box, Pete Goalby, Bob Daisley, Lee Kerslake and John Sinclair. Abominog sounds extraordinarily heavy and is well received. Head First (1983) is the same cut but slightly more polished. Then label Bronze throws in the towel and the band is without a contract. Equator is recorded for the Portrait label in 1985. Daisley is then replaced by the returned Trevor Bolder. The album is not a success. The wilderness years are upon us. Sinclair and Goalby leave. Bernie Shaw and Phil Lanzon joined in 1986 and are still with them to this day. The lineup that would last more than 20 years together is: Box, Bolder, Kerslake, Lanzon and Shaw. Albums such as Raging Silence (1989) and Different World (1991) are recorded with varying degrees of success. Only when Sea of Light (1995) sees the light, many Heep fans wake up again. Sonic Origami , released in 1998, is just as consistent in quality with obvious classic Heep characteristics. In 2000, Heep comes under the care of "Classic Rock Productions". Various DVDs are recorded during live concerts, the most memorable of which is the 2001 reunion concert with Hensley and Lawton. The band has signed a new contract with "Sanctuary".

In January 2007 drummer Kerslake leaves the band for health reasons. Not much later Russell Gilbrook takes his place. Russell is a power drummer who has played with the greats in the rock world such as Tony Iommi and Van Morrison. With Russell the new studio album Wake the Sleeper is recorded in the summer of 2007. "Universal" released the album worldwide in June 2008.

In October 2009, Uriah Heep released their 40th anniversary album Celebration with new studio recordings of twelve of the best known songs, as well as two completely new songs. On May 21, 2013, Trevor Bolder passed away from cancer.
