Hausser/Elastolin

The O&M Hausser company was started in 1904 by the brothers Max and Otto Hausser in Ludwigsburg.
An extraordinarily large collection of figures was made here under the brand name 'Elastolin'. The first figures were mainly animal figures of about 10 -14 cm in size.
The first 7 cm figures did not appear until 1912 and were still simple. These were historical or contemporary figures/soldiers of many nationalities and a relentless stream of animal figures, pets and zoo animals. The figures were formed/pressed around a wire frame from a material consisting mainly of sawdust, linseed and glue (composite) and then painted by hand. After the takeover of the Tipple Topple Company in 1925, all kinds of tin vehicles and cannons were added.
In the 1930s the company moved to Neustadt near Coburg.
Especially after 1936, every part of the German army was depicted. Production lasted until 1943 and was resumed in 1946 and these were mainly non-military series. After the end of World War II, production was subjected to the strict conditions of "de-Nazification."

Already in the early 1940s, his son Rolf Hausser experimented with all kinds of plastic. Hausser continued to use the Elastolin brand name when in 1955 it replaced composite production with figures in series of 7 and 4 cm true-to-life polystyrene figures with very high detailing: Roman soldiers, Huns, Vikings, Normans, Landsknechts and 17th century Turks and more follow the. Hausser-Elastolin made personifications of Prince Valiant and Karl May.
Along with these figures came an impressive new line of catapults, siege towers, a battering ram, camp fences, and early artillery pieces.
In France the series were released by the company Ougen.

Collectors recognize a number of different production series (or types) by the painting and the rarity (and value) of a number of figures also determines the color of their clothing; some colors are rarer than others.

Hausser stopped producing composite figures in 1969. The production of plastic figures lasted until 1982. And the company went bankrupt at the end of 1983. Many of the Hausser molds were bought by the Preiser Company and this produces almost the complete, and here and there even extensive series of 7 cm figures on the market.
The Barthel company also releases the complete range of 4 and 7 cm figures, together with a large expansion of new models.
