Vander Elst is a brand name of the eponymous cigar manufacturer from Leuven (BE). More

Farmer's son Henri Vander Elst got hold of the tobacco taste in a Brussels factory – later Ajja. In 1874 he started his own spinning mill for rolling tobacco in the Pereboomstraat in Leuven. Three years later, Henri gave up in Leuven and left the company to his 2 younger brothers, François and Alphonse, who set up the company 'Vander Elst Gebroeders'.

Henri Vander Elst, who had started to focus in Antwerp on the direct import of
American tobacco, financially helps his brothers after the great flood in Leuven in 1891. They buy a building on Tiensevest and in Nobelstraat, the core of the factory that was only closed in 2010. Through extensive modernizations, the brothers became the market leader in 1913: 25,000 kg of tobacco per week, no cigars but chewing and smoking tobacco and small amounts of snuff.

of cigarettes (including Belga) and smoking tobacco. Extensive mechanization and rationalization
cause the cigarillo production of Rijkevorsel and Sint-Truiden to return to Leuven.

From 1965 Vander Elst only produces cigars in Leuven.

In August 1967 the Vander Elst family agrees to sell; the German tobacco group Martin Brinkmann AG thus acquires 40% of the Tabacofina shares.

On September 29, 1989, the English group Rothmans International acquired all the shares of Tabacofina. In 1999 Rothmans in turn merged with British American Tobacco.
Finally, in September 2007 Henri Wintermans Cigars takes over the Leuven cigar business
from BAT and becomes part of the Danish Scandinavian Tobacco.

The factory will close in 2010. Production and approximately 190 employees will move to Europe's largest cigar factory, Scandinavian Tobacco Group Lummen.

In augustus 1914 wordt Leuven door Duitse soldaten in de as gelegd. Ook het bedrijf Vander

Elst deelt in de klappen. Zowel het tabaksmagazijn als de bedrijfsgebouwen gaan in de

vlammen op. Na de oorlog kan Vander Elst, dankzij zijn grote tabaksvoorraden in de VS en Nederland, als eerste weer kwaliteitsproducten op de markt brengen.

Op 22 juni 1928 verenigen zich onder impuls van Vander Elst een aantal Belgische

tabaksproducenten in de financiële holding Tabacofina. Tot die groep behoren ondermeer,

naast Vander Elst, de sigarenfabrikanten Jubilé uit Luik, Cogétama-Neron uit Gent en Alto uit

Turnhout.

In mei ’40 vernielt een Duits luchtbombardement opnieuw een groot deel van de installaties. Gezien de omvang van de schade wordt beslist om ter plekke een volledig nieuw complex uit te bouwen met drie onderscheiden afdelingen: voor rooktabak, voor sigaretten en voor sigaren.

Een nieuwe Vander Elst vestiging in Merksem neemt achtereenvolgens de Leuvense productie

van sigaretten (o.m. Belga) en rooktabak over. Doorgedreven mechanisatie en rationalisering

maken dat de cigarilloproduktie van Rijkevorsel en Sint-Truiden weer in Leuven terechtkomt.

Vanaf 1965 produceert Vander Elst in Leuven enkel nog sigaren.

In augustus 1967 stemt de familie Vander Elst toe om te verkopen; de Duitse tabaksgroep Martin Brinkmann A.G. verkrijgt zo 40% van de Tabacofina aandelen.

Op 29 september 1989 verwerft de Engelse groep Rothmans International alle aandelen van Tabacofina. In 1999 gaat Rothmans op zijn beurt op in British American Tobacco.

In september 2007 tenslotte neemt Henri Wintermans Cigars de Leuvense sigarenactiviteiten

van BAT over en wordt het onderdeel van het Deense Scandinavian Tobacco.

De fabriek sluit in 2010. De productie en de ongeveer 190 personeelsleden verhuizen naar de grootste Europese sigarenfabriek, Scandinavian Tobacco Group Lummen.
