Richard Horatio Edgar Wallace was an English journalist and writer of crime thrillers and plays.

His parents were actors, Richard Horatio Edgar Marriott and Polly Richards. When he was nine days old, he was adopted by a fishmonger from Billingsgate in London, who raised him like a son of his own. He began his writing career as a war correspondent for the London newspaper the Daily Mail during the Second Boer War. He then turned to crime stories, at a rapid pace: he would write a total of 175 books, in addition to 24 plays and a large amount of journalistic work. His first book was The Four Just Men (1905), about a group of men who take the law into their own hands. As a publicity stunt, it appeared without the end; the readers were asked to find out the exact facts themselves and they could win a cash prize. There were so many correct entries that Wallace nearly went bankrupt, but his name was established and this and many of his later books became bestsellers.

He is considered the "inventor" of the modern thriller; his heroes are generally police officers and not amateur detectives as most detective writers used to be back then. He was a master at building suspense to climax and crafting ingenious plots where the identity of the perpetrator and how he committed the crime is only revealed at the very last minute.

He died of pneumonia in Hollywood where he was working on the screenplay for the movie "King Kong", which was released in 1933. Despite his enormous production, his lavish lifestyle left him with large debts, which could be fully repaid within a few years from the proceeds of his books, films and plays.

More than 160 of his books have been made into films and, in addition to Great Britain, he was especially popular in Germany. In both countries, film series were made around his stories from 1959. In the German films by Rialto , Klaus Kinski often acted as the criminal. Many of Edgar Wallace 's books have also been translated into Dutch.
