His first book “Hunt for Red October” was published in 1986. It became an instant hit and was successfully adapted into a movie. The books he wrote afterwards have also all become bestsellers and many of them have been made into films. The main character in many of his books is Jack Ryan. The last book he wrote all by himself about this hero was “The teeth of the tiger” published in 2003. Even after his death in 2013, books about Jack Ryan have been and are being written with Clancy's name on the books, but now they are stating the actual author.

Less well-known is that many books on which his name is written were not written by him alone, if at all.

He has also created a number of successful series together with someone else. The names of the creators of the series appear on all books, the name of the real author only sporadically.
