Rare Earth

Rare Earth is an American Rhythm-and-blues/Blues rock band, best known as the first successful "white" band to be signed to the record label Motown. Motown's label Rare Earth Records, which defunct in 1976, was named after the band.

The group was founded in the 1960s under the name "The Sunliners". In 1968 the name was changed to "Rare Earth". After the group released an unsuccessful debut album entitled "Dream/Answers" on Verve, they were signed to Motown in 1969. They were the first band to be assigned to Motown's new label specifically for white rock bands. It was the band themselves that came up with the idea to call this new label "Rare Earth".

The main members in the early days of the group were Bil Bridges (saxophone, flute and vocalist), Peter Rivera alias Peter Hoorelbeke (vocalist, drums), John Persh alias John Parrish (bass guitar, trombone and vocalist), Rod Richards (born Rod Cox; guitar, vocals) and Kenny James (born Ken Folcik, Keyboard, Hammond Organ). In 1969 Rare Earth provided the music for the movie "Generation" starring David Janssen and Kim Darby. An accompanying soundtrack album was not released as the film became a commercial flop. Therefore, many of the band's songs were incorporated into the next album, "Ecology", from 1970. In late 1969, Edward "Eddie" Guzman joined the group.

Rare Earth had a number of top 40 hits in 1970 and 1971, including covers of The Temptations' "(I Know) I'm Losing You" and "Get Ready". The live-recorded cover of "Get Ready" became their biggest hit ever. The song reached number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 as a single version and was therefore more successful than the original release by The Temptations. Other hits in 1971 were "I Just Want to Celebrate" and "Hey, Big Brother". The single version of "Get Ready" was mixed down to 2:45 minutes and was taken from the first album under Motown. Oddly enough, the 21:17 minute live track is on side B of this album and initially served as a 'filler' for an album to be released. It is rumored that the songwriter Smokey Robinson himself advised plugging the song as a single and with success. The then unknown album was renamed "Get Ready" by the single hit, which somewhat explains the different cover art of the album cover and there is doubt whether it is originally the album title. Despite this, the album made the US Album Top 20 under the title "Get Ready".

In 1971, Richards left due to disagreements with the other members. James left the group because of the inconvenient tour schedule for him. Ray MOnette and Mark Olson replaced them. In 1972, Motown moved from Detroit to Los Angeles and Rare Earth moved with it. Only Persh did not want to move and left the band. Mike Urso replaced him.

The 1973 album "Ma" is often regarded as Rare Earth's best work. This includes their version of "Hum Along and Dance".

In April 1974, Rare Earth was the opening act at the "California Jam festival" in Ontario, California. They performed with Black Sabbath, Emerson, Lake & Palmer, Deep Purple, Earth, Wind & Fire, Seals & Crofts, Black Oak Arkansas and the Eagles.

In 1974, a split within the group occurred when Rivera had a serious business and personal disagreement with their manager, Ron Strasner. The other band members sided with Strasner except for Mike Urso, after which Rivera and Urso left and formed their own band: HUB. Around the same time, Olsen also left the group to join Jennifer Warnes' backup band. The departed members were replaced by Jerry La Croix (vocals, sax, harmonica), Paul Warren (guitar, backing vocals), Barry "Frosty" Frost (drums), Reggie McBride (bass), and Gabriel Katona (keyboards).

During the following tour in 1975, both Paul Warren and Frosty left. Drummer Chet McCracken was hired to accompany the group for the remainder of the tour. In 1976 the band recorded "Midnight Lady". Frank Westbrook replaced Katona as keyboard player. However, none of their new songs matched the success of their previous singles. In addition, former band member Rivera filed a lawsuit against Rare Earth, accusing them of foregoing the members' retirement money. Rivera won the case and was awarded damages.

In 1976 there were plans for a reunion with all members from the 1972-1974 period for a new album for Prodigal Records, but this fell through because Monette and Olson were against the plan. That's why new members Dan Ferguson and Ron Fransen were brought in. The next album, "Rarearth", was released in 1977, but fell short of the band's and producers' expectations. Later in 1977, Rare Earth began working on two new albums with producer John Ryan. This time, Monette and Olson agreed to a reunion. The albums were "Band Together" and "Grand Slam", both released in 1978. Neither album was a major success.

In June 1979 Urso left the band again. He was replaced by Ken Johnston, who remained with the group until June 1981.

In 1980, songwriter Dino Fekaris, who had previously written the hits "I Just Want to Celebrate" and "Hey Big Brother," returned to Rare Earth. With his help, Rare Earth started their next project. This was originally going to be titled "King of the Mountain" and become the title song of a 1981 film, but the film producers turned the album down. Eventually the album was released as "Tight & Hot".

In 1982 Mike Urso returned to Rare Earth for a while, but in 1983 he left for good. Peter Rivera also left in 1983. Most of the remaining band members moved back to Detroit and continued to perform in clubs there, even though they no longer had a record deal.

In the mid 80's some changes took place in the band. McCormick was replaced in 1984 by Weaver's friend Andy Merrild, Randy "Bird" Burghdoff took over Merrild's place in 1985, drummer Bob Rock joined the group briefly in 1985 before being replaced by Jerry LeBloch and Mark Olson left in 1986 .

In the 90s Rare Earth was offered more performances again. Drummer Dean Boucher replaced LeBloch in 1990. Rare Earth was signed to the small record label Koch International. Here they released the album "Different World" in 1993. Eddie Guzman died in his home in July 1993 from the effects of diabetes and alcoholism. The group continued with new drummer Floyd Stokes Jr. as a replacement for Guzman. He also took over the vocals from Baraks when he left in 1994.

Rare Earth still performs at gigs specializing in bands from the 60s and 70s. Their hit song "I Just Want to Celebrate" has been featured in several Ford Motor Company and AT&T advertising campaigns and has also been featured in films such as "Three Kings", "A Knight's Tale" and "Land of the Lost".

In 2005, Rare Earth was inducted into the Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.

Rare Earth had een aantal top 40-hits in 1970 en 1971, waaronder covers van The Temptations' "(I Know) I'm Losing You" en "Get Ready". Andere hits in 1971 waren "I Just Want to Celebrate" en "Hey, Big Brother".

Drummer Dean Boucher verving LeBloch in 1990.

Hun hit "I Just Want to Celebrate" is gebruikt in verschillende reclamecampagnes van Ford Motor Company and AT&T en is ook te horen geweest in films als "Three Kings", "A Knight's Tale" en "Land of the Lost".

In 2005 werd Rare Earth opgenomen in de Michigan Rock and Roll Legends Hall of Fame.
