Willem Van Cotthem

Cotthem, Willem Van

As a university lecturer in botanical sciences at Ghent University (Belgium), he conducted research on plant morphology and anatomy, with a particular focus on stomata. His scientific interests were linked early on to a broad social engagement, particularly regarding the living conditions of people in dry and vulnerable regions.

Between 1982 and 1992, he developed the soil improver TerraCottem . This innovation spawned numerous humanitarian projects on all continents, aimed at improving living standards in dry regions through more sustainable agriculture and more efficient water use.

From 1992 to 1995, he represented Belgium as a scientist in the six sessions of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee for the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (INCD). This intergovernmental committee negotiated the treaty against desertification, which later became known as the UNCCD.

From 1994 to 2006, he was elected as a representative of Belgian scientists working on desertification. In this capacity, he participated as a Belgian delegate in all Conferences of the Parties (COP), meetings of the CST (Committee on Science and Technology), and meetings of the CRIC (Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention).

In addition, he was elected co-chair of the Ad Hoc Working Group (AHWG), charged with the in-depth analysis and evaluation of the national reports submitted at the third and fourth Conferences of the Parties.

Since 2007, he has been the initiator of the "Seeds for Food" campaign. This project collects vegetable and tropical fruit seeds for free distribution within development projects. The goal is simple and concrete: to strengthen local food production and enable communities to become self-sufficient.
