Postcards from Çeşme

Çeşme

Çeşme (Turkish for "fountain") is a city and district on the west coast of Turkey, about 80 kilometers west of İzmir and 600 kilometers from Istanbul.

According to the Greek writer Pausanias, the first settlement in the area was founded by Cretans around 700 BC. Later, it came under the rule of the Lydians and the Persians. In ancient times, Erythrae (present-day Ildırı) was the center of the region.

In the Middle Ages, Çeşme grew into an important port when the Republic of Genoa and the Beylik of Aydın used it as a transit point for trade between Asia and Europe. After the Ottoman conquest in 1566, the city lost its economic importance to İzmir.

In 1770, a naval battle between Russian and Ottoman fleets took place in the Bay of Çeşme. From the 19th century onward, the trade in fruit, wine, tobacco, and olive oil flourished again. According to the 1893 Ottoman census, Çeşme had 30,702 inhabitants, the majority of whom were of Greek-Ottoman descent. Following the population exchanges after World War I, Turks from Greece, Bosnia, and Albania settled in the city.
