The production cell: this is a transparency on which the sketch is copied by means of so-called inking. This cell is then painted on the back with special acrylic paint. The cell takes its name from 'celluloid', the transparent that used to be painted on.

The production cell is placed on a background, possibly with other cells (this is referred to as a 'cell setup'). The resulting image is then reflected in the film.

What are Limited Edition Cels?
The cartoon studios publish animation art in limited editions especially for collectors: the so-called `limited edition cels'. These pieces are made in exactly the same way as the production cels, based on the original sketch. The painting is also done by hand for these cels in the studio. The limited edition cels are usually issued in an edition of 100 to 500 pieces. One reason for releasing these pieces is the simple fact that a lot of work, especially older films, has been lost.

For a limited edition cell, one of the most beautiful moments from your favorite film is always selected.

Another reason to release these hand-painted limited editions is that the latest cartoons are usually colored with the computer. The image is then put on film via the computer. With the release of limited edition cels of such a new cartoon, the studios are still meeting the collectors.

Van Storyboard tot Production Cel

Tekenfilmkunst, de bekendste vorm van animatiekunst, is een kunstvorm die zeer bekend is in vooral Amerika en Groot-Brittannië. Het betreft origineel werk, gebruikt bij de creatie van een tekenfilm. Aan een tekenfilm werken ware artiesten, die afbeeldingen tot leven laten komen. Hun werk wordt op film gezet en die film is het eindresultaat waar u met plezier naar kijkt. Het originele werk bestaat uit:

Het storyboard: dit is het vooraf gemaakte tekenfilmverhaal in stripvorm;

(Ander) Pre-production/concept artwork/voorstudies;

Achtergrondschilderingen;

De produktie-tekening: dit is een potloodtekening op speciaal animatiepapier;

De production cel: dit is een transparant waarop de schets wordt overgenomen door middel van het zogenaamde inkten. Deze cel wordt vervolgens aan de achterzijde met speciale acrylverf ingeschilderd.
De cel ontleent zijn naam aan 'celluloid', het transparant waarop vroeger werd geschilderd.

De production cel wordt, eventueel met andere cels (er is dan sprake van een 'cel-setup'), op een achtergrond gelegd. Het beeld, dat hierdoor ontstaat, ziet u dan terug in de film.

Wat zijn Limited Edition Cels?

De tekenfilmstudio's geven speciaal voor verzamelaars animatiekunst uit in beperkte oplagen: de zogenaamde `limited edition cels'. Deze stukken worden op exact dezelfde wijze gemaakt als de production cels, aan de hand van de originele schets. Het schilderwerk wordt ook bij deze cels in de studio met de hand uitgevoerd. De limited edition cels worden meestal in een oplage van 100 tot 500 stuks uitgegeven. Een reden om deze stukken uit te brengen is het eenvoudige feit, dat veel werk van vooral oudere films verloren is gegaan.

Voor een limited edition cel wordt ook altijd één van de mooiste momenten uit uw favoriete film uitgekozen.

Een andere reden om deze handgeschilderde limited editions uit te geven is, dat de nieuwste tekenfilms meestal met de computer zijn ingekleurd. Het beeld wordt dan via de computer op film gezet. Met de uitgave van limited edition cels van zo'n nieuwe tekenfilm komen de studio's toch de verzamelaars tegemoet.

Sericels

Sericels zijn zeefdrukken op transparanten. Deze cels worden in een grotere oplage gemaakt dan limited edition cels. Net zoals de andere tekenfilmcels, zijn sericels echte collector's items.
