Postcards from Kôm Ombo

The Temple of Kom Ombo, located in southern Egypt on the Nile, is one of the most remarkable temples of ancient Egypt. What makes this temple so exceptional is that it is a double temple — a unique architectural form in which the sanctuary is divided into two symmetrical halves.

The temple is dedicated to two deities:
- Haroëris (Horus the Elder): The falcon god of light, justice and protection. His sanctuary was located on the right side of the temple. His wife Tasenetnofret and their son Panebtawi were also worshipped here.
- Sobek: The crocodile god, symbol of fertility, the power of the Nile and protection against dangers. His sanctuary was located on the left side of the temple. He was worshipped together with his wife Hathor and son Khonsu.

The division into two halves is so consistently carried out that the temple contains two entrances, two sacred places and two parallel series of rooms. Yet there are also shared elements – some reliefs and ritual scenes flow into each other, suggesting a certain theological coherence or tolerance.
This double structure may reflect the priests' attempt to unite rival religious traditions or regional cults. The temple was built during the Ptolemaic period (c. 180–47 BC), but many decorations were added later by Roman emperors.

The Kom Ombo temple complex also houses a small museum of crocodile mummies dedicated to the god Sobek—a rare tribute to this mighty Nile god.
