Saga was formed in 1977 from the remnant of the band Fludd . The first line-up consisted of vocalist Michael Sadler, bassist Jim Crichton, guitarist Ian Crichton, keyboardist Peter Rochon and drummer Steve Negus.

In June 1978 Saga is released on the Maze label. For the second album, Images At Twilight (1979), Peter Rochon was replaced by session keyboardist Gregg Chadd. From Silent Knight (1980) Jim 'Daryl' Gilmour became the keyboardist. Worlds Apart was released in 1981, which is produced by Rupert Hine, known for "Camel" among others. Each of the first four albums features two songs that together form a concept called The Chapters . These songs are in random order and form a science fiction story created by bassist Jim Crichton. The band also hired Rupert Hine as producer for Heads Or Tales .

In 1986, Steve Negus and Jim 'Daryl' Gilmour decided to leave the band and focus on the "GNP" project, which included vocalist Bev Bevan. As a trio, the band then recorded Wildest Dreams and The Beginners Guide To Throwing Shapes . In 1993 James Gilmour and Steve Negus returned and in this line-up, which is usually considered the most successful, the band started releasing albums more regularly. In 1995, Generation 13 was released, a concept album in the style of "Operation: Mindcrime" by "Queensryche".

On Pleasure and the Pain , which marks the band's twentieth anniversary, the drums were played by Glen Sobel. Phase One featured recordings from 1979 played live by the band in the studio, featuring five previously unreleased tracks and demo versions of Mouse In A Maze , You're Not Alone , and Hot Too Cold . From Full Circle to Marathon, the band picked up the themes of the first records and they complete the story of The Chapters .

On Network , Steve Negus was replaced, this time by Christian Simpson. Steve Negus returned once more for the live record The Chapters , but will not play on Trust . The new drummer is Brian Doerner.

In 2007 Michael Sadler announced his departure from the band. In 2008 he was succeeded by Rob Moratti. It is now 2011 and Michael Sadler is back at Saga .

Saga co-headlined a tour of Europe with "Marillion". In mid-April 2012, it was announced that Mike Thorne is the new drummer. Early July 2012, the new album 20/20 was released, and the "20/20" world tour was announced.

Their most recent double CD is called Sagacity . The first CD was recorded in a studio, while the second CD contains live recordings. This double CD was released in June 2014.
