The Capacitance Electronic Disc (CED), developed by the Radio Corporation of America (RCA) and released in 1981, is an analog playback system for video discs. Also known as RCA "SelectaVision" VideoDisc.

This allowed (NTSC) video and audio to be played on a television set using a special device (stylus) and a high-density groove system, similar to that of gramophone records.

The CED's capacity was limited; often, after about an hour of watching, the user had to turn the CED over halfway through a film to continue watching. The system was also extremely sensitive to dust and minor damage. The CED records were housed in special plastic sleeves, so the user didn't have to touch the records themselves; they were inserted into the player using the sleeve ("caddy").

One of the unique aspects of the system was that a user could easily navigate between chapters on the CED disc, without having to fast-forward like with a videotape. This was far ahead of its time. Unfortunately, the system was also vulnerable to minimal damage to the CED discs.

The system was primarily for the American market, although efforts were also made to gain market share in England. The discs in England were in the PAL format, but only 286 titles were released for the English market.

Besides competing with videotape, two other systems based on playing films using discs came onto the market. One was a similar system from the Japanese company JVC, the VHD (Video High Density), which also used a player that could display film images on television using a stylus. These discs were smaller and, like the CED, were inserted into the player with a plastic sleeve. This system was primarily successful in Japan. Finally, there was Laservision, developed by Philips, a Laserdisc disc (with an analog video signal) that was read using a laser. Of the three systems, the Laserdisc had the longest lifespan.

Competition with the VHS and Betamax video systems was fierce in the United States. A major disadvantage of the CED was that, unlike videotapes, the user could not record programs on it. The CED was not a success, becoming a financial burden for RCA, and ultimately only 1,700 disc titles of films, documentaries, and TV series were released before the system was discontinued in 1986. This ultimately led (along with other failed projects such as the development of mainframe computers) to RCA's financial demise. The company was acquired by General Electric in June 1986, and RCA now exists only as a brand name.

Daarmee was men hun tijd ver vooruit.
