Chick Corea

Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea is an American jazz pianist/keyboardist and composer.

Among fellow jazz pianists, Corea is considered one of the most influential pianists since Bill Evans. He participated in the development of the fusion movement as a member of Miles Davis' group in the 1960s and continued this path individually with Return to Forever . He is currently actively engaged in his Electric Band .

He played with Herbie Hancock, Sarah Vaughan, Miles Davis, Gary Burton, Chaka Khan and Friedrich Gulda; his style was influenced by Ornette Coleman, John Cage and Karlheinz Stockhausen.

Corea was born in Chelsea, Massachusetts. His trumpeter father had led a Dixieland group in Boston in the 1930s and 1940s and gave Chick classical piano lessons when he was about five years old. Due to his early introduction to jazz music, he was influenced by bebop stars such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Horace Silver and Bud Powell.

In March 1968 Corea released his most influential album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs with bassist Miroslav Vitouš and drummer Roy Haynes. The second half of the song Steps - What Was is an early version of La Fiesta that first appears on the debut of Return to Forever .

In September 1968, he joined Miles Davis' band and played on Filles de Kilimanjaro , In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew . During this period Corea experimented with electric keyboards, mainly the Fender Rhodes electric piano.

Leaving Davis in the early 1970s, he became a leader in several projects, starting in 1970 with " Circle ", an avant-garde jazz group featuring Anthony Braxton, Dave Holland and drummer Barry Altschul.

In 1972 he founded " Return to Forever ". Return to Forever's lineup changed frequently over a five-year period, but bassist Stanley Clarke would remain a constant presence alongside Corea. The first formation with singer Flora Plurim, her husband Airto Moreiro on drums/percussion and saxophonist Joe Farrell, played mainly Latin-oriented fusion, cfr. their self-titled record debut on ECM Records, where Corea's well-known compositions Crystal Silence and La Fiesta came from. The band reached its peak in the mid-1970s with the album Romantic Warrior .

Corea was also active as a composer. He has written a series of relatively simple yet attractive pieces of study that are loved by piano students.

After writing classical compositions for some time in the early eighties, he returned to jazz in the mid eighties. With the Chick Corea Elektric Band (Dave Weckl drums; John Patitucci bass; Eric Marienthal saxophone and various guitarists including Frank Gambale) he continued to play an important role in fusion from the eighties.

In maart 1968 gaf Corea zijn meest invloedrijke album Now He Sings, Now He Sobs uit met bassist Miroslav Vitouš en drummer Roy Haynes.
