A 7" record that looks a lot like a regular 7" single (vinyl), but has a slightly longer playing time. An EP often contains four songs. More

In the late 1940s, both Columbia (later CBS) and RCA were looking for successors to the 78 rpm gramophone record. Columbia introduced the first Long Play record at 33 1/3 rpm in 1948 (the first 7 inch, 45 rpm single was also released during that period).
RCA opted for a 7 inch, 45 rpm record, which contains several songs per side. Playing at 45 rpm basically provides better sound quality than playing at 33 1/3 rpm. However, the EP contains more data than the single on virtually the same surface, which basically degrades the sound quality compared to the single.

In 1952 the EP ("Extended play") was introduced. The heyday of the EP was approximately between 1955 and 1970. Due to increased prosperity in various Western countries, the LP was no longer a luxury item around 1970. As a result, the relatively expensive EP became less and less popular. Sales of singles also declined around 1970.

Differences between EP and single vinyl:

The label of an EP, or on the sleeve, often contains the words "EP" or "Extended Play", "Extended playing time", "Verlängerte Spieldauer", "Surée prolongée". French EPs also contain the mention "Super 45 tours" in addition to "Durée prolongée". Sometimes we find the mention "variable grade" (= variable distance between the grooves).
The EP often has a release number that includes EP or PE.
The EP has a longer running time, usually more songs than one per side. The single (vinyl) has 1 song per side with, in the 50s and 60s, a playing time of around 3 minutes per side;
The EP has a variable "pitch" (distance between the grooves); the single vinyl originally had a fixed "pitch". By reducing the distance between the grooves, a longer playing time was possible.
In the 1970s, variable pitch also began to be used on singles, allowing singles to have a playing time of more than 3 minutes per side (e.g. the single version of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody).
The sleeve of an EP is made of thicker paper, often laminated on the front with a layer of plastic or cellophane. Many EPs also have an inner sleeve made of blank paper, plastic or cellophane. The inner sleeve is often missing on second-hand copies.
The single (vinyl) usually has a fragile paper sleeve (often a factory sleeve that leaves the label open). Unfortunately, there are also - rare - exceptions: EPs with a paper factory sleeve. An example of an early EP with a (sturdy) paper factory sleeve is LD #5462145;
The sales price in the 1950s and 1960s. In the Netherlands, the EP usually cost 6.25 guilders or more (some EPs with classical music were around 8 guilders); the price of a single was f 4.95 or less (f 3.60 and f 3.95 also occur).
EPs released by budget labels or manufacturers of branded items (often food) cost (considerably) less than 6.25 guilders. It also happened occasionally that an EP was offered for a lower price than 6.25 guilders for promotional reasons.

From the late 1960s to the mid-1970s, 7" records were regularly released with 1 song on the A-side and 2 on the B-side. These were called "maxingle".
7" records at 33 1/3 rpm were also produced, containing 3 or 4 songs per side. In the Netherlands (and perhaps also in Belgium) this format was called "Mini-LP". Example: the gramophone records of the Popular Records Circle. Another example is a British 7" gramophone record from 1973, which is referred to as LP (see LD #8139781).
Nowadays, by mini-LP we usually mean the 10" (25 cm) LP to distinguish it from the 12" (30 cm) LP.
In the LastDodo catalogue, the 7", 33 1/3 rpm records are classified as EP.
The early EPs were often called "45 rpm LPs" in the Dutch language area.

Eind jaren 40 waren zowel Columbia (later CBS) als RCA op zoek naar opvolgers van de 78 toeren grammofoonplaat. Columbia introduceerde de eerste Long Play- grammofoonplaat op 33 1/3 toeren in 1948 (in die periode werd ook de eerste 7 inch, 45 toeren single uitgebracht).

RCA koos voor een 7 inch, 45 toeren plaatje, dat meerdere nummers per kant bevat. Afspelen op 45 toeren levert in principe een betere geluidskwaliteit dan afspelen op 33 1/3 toeren. De EP bevat echter meer gegevens dan de single op vrijwel hetzelfde oppervlak, waardoor de geluidskwaliteit ten opzichte van single in beginsel verslechtert.

Verschillen tussen EP en single vinyl:

Op het label van een EP, dan wel op het hoesje, staat dikwijls de vermelding "EP" of "Extended Play", "Verlengde speelduur", "Verlängerte Spieldauer", "Durée prolongée". Bij Franse EP's komen naast "Durée prolongée" ook de vermelding "Super 45 tours" tegen. Soms treffen we de vermelding "variable grade" (=variabele afstand tussen de groeven) aan.

De EP heeft vaak een releasenummer, waarin EP of PE is verwerkt.

De EP heeft een langere speelduur, meestal meer nummers dan één per kant. De single (vinyl) heeft 1 nummer per kant met, in de jaren 50 en 60, een speelduur van rond de 3 minuten per kant;

De EP heeft een variabele "spoed" (afstand tussen de groeven) ; de single vinyl had oorspronkelijk een vaste "spoed". Door de afstand tussen de groeven te verkleinen was een langere speelduur mogelijk.

In de jaren 70 begon men ook bij singles een variabele spoed toe te passen, waardoor singles per kant een speelduur van meer dan 3 minuten konden krijgen (bv. de singleversie van Bohemian Rhapsody van Queen).

Het hoesje van een EP is gemaakt van dikker papier, aan de voorzijde vaak gelamineerd met een laagje plastic of cellofaan. Veel EP's hebben eveneens een binnenhoes van blanco papier, plastic of cellofaan. Bij tweedehands exemplaren is de binnenhoes vaak verdwenen.

De single (vinyl) heeft meestal een kwetsbaar papieren hoesje (vaak een fabriekshoesje dat het label openlaat). Helaas zijn er ook - zeldzame - uitzonderingen: EP's met een papieren fabriekshoes. Een voorbeeld van een vroege EP met een (stevige) papieren fabriekshoes is LD #5462145;

De verkoopprijs in de jaren 50 en 60. In Nederland kostte de EP doorgaans f 6,25 of meer (sommige EP's met klassieke muziek waren rond de 8 gulden) ; de prijs van een single was f 4,95 of minder (ook f 3,60 en f 3.95 komen voor).

EP's uitgebracht door budgetlabels of fabrikanten van merkartikelen (vaak levensmiddelen) kostten overigens (aanzienlijk) minder dan f 6,25. Ook kwam het een enkele keer voor dat een EP om promotionele redenen voor een lagere prijs dan f 6,25 werd aangeboden.

Vanaf eind jaren 60 tot halverwege jaren 70 werden regelmatig 7" plaatjes uitgebracht met 1 nummer op de A-kant én 2 op de B-kant. Die werden "maxisingle" genoemd.

Er werd ook 7" plaatjes op 33 1/3 toeren geproduceerd, die 3 of 4 nummers per kant bevatten. In Nederland (en misschien ook in België) werd dit formaat " Mini-LP " genoemd. Voorbeeld: de grammofoonplaatjes van de Populaire Platen Kring. Een ander voorbeeld is een Britse 7" grammofoonplaat uit 1973, die wordt aangeduid als LP (zie LD #8139781).

Tegenwoordig bedoelen we met mini-LP meestal de 10"(25 cm) LP om deze te onderscheiden van de 12"(30 cm) LP.

In de catalogus van LastDodo worden de 7", 33 1/3 toeren plaatjes ingedeeld bij de EP.

De vroege EP's werden in het Nederlandse taalgebied dikwijls "45 toeren langspeelplaat" genoemd.
