About the band name:
Perhaps because of the rather sizable line-up , the band was first called Big Thing , but when a record deal with CBS was signed and - very unusually - a double album was immediately placed on the roll, the Chicago Transit Authority (abbreviated CTA ), the official name of Chicago's public transportation company (see logo). Apparently unfamiliar with the concept of free publicity , the Authority ordered the band to choose another name; then it became Chicago for short.
