He was one of the first major soloists in jazz and was perhaps the first notable jazz saxophonist.
Powerful delivery, well-constructed improvisations and a distinctive, wide vibrato characterised Bechet's playing.
However, Bechet's erratic temperament hampered his career and it was not until the late 1940s that he achieved widespread recognition.

He began his career when he was under 19, playing in the jazz bands of Bunk Johnson and later Clarence Williams.
From the 1920s onwards he played mainly abroad (London and Paris) and also in New York.
In 1932 he founded The New Orleans Feetwarmers with Tommy Ladnier.
After the Second World War he lived mainly in Paris.
