Coins from India

Overview of the forms of government, the currency system and the mints of India.

Until the British East India Company expanded into India in 1835, each Indian state had its own coins. These were difficult to compare in value, and had all kinds of different names, such as Rupee, Mohur, Pana, Paisa.. For identification/cataloguing you have to look elsewhere for detailed information.
After 1835 the British East India Company had a monopoly for trade in India until 1853. A failed rebellion ensured that from 1858 all of India came under the British Crown. Victoria was the first empress of India until 1901. She was succeeded by Edward VII, then George V, Edward VIII and George VI. Their heads can be found on Indian coins from the time of 1858-1947.
In that last year, India became independent (and Pakistan split off).

In the early 1800s, you may come across coins with values in Cash or Pie.
From 1835 to 1947, more or less the same system was used throughout India.

In it, the Rupee was subdivided into 16 Annas. The Anna in turn was worth 12 Pies. So the Rupee was 192 Pies. The name Pice was also used. The Rupee contained 64 Pice, so to keep it simple: 1 Pice = 3 Pies.
Understandably, this non-decimal system was later abandoned. Since 1957, the Rupee has been used, which is divided into 100 Paisa.

Before the British period, each state had its own mint. The arrival of the British had a major influence on this. The coinage was concentrated in a few places.
This can be determined because a small detail has been added below the year of the coin.
If there is a dot, or a rhombus (“diamond”), the coin is minted in Bombay (present name Mumbai). If there is no sign, the mint is Calcutta (Kolkata).
Hyderabad also occasionally minted. Here a five-pointed star, a split diamond or a dot-in-diamond (dot in diamond) is in use as a mintmark. There is also sporadic minting in Lahore, hallmark: letter “L”.
The newly opened mint in Noida uses a dot or dot.
Modern Indian coins occasionally use a mint in another country. For example, here you see a letter “C” for Canada, while production was also made in Pretoria, Seoul and Mexico.
