Finland was een deel van het Zweedse rijk van de 12e eeuw tot 1809. In 1809 werd Finland veroverd door Rusland waarop er een unie ontstond tussen de twee landen. In 1917 verklaarde Finland de onafhankelijkheid, in 1918 werd dit erkend.
De markka werd in 1860 geïntroduceerd als een kwartje van de Russische Roebel. Toen Finland in 1917 zijn onafhankelijkheid uitriep, werd de Bank van Finland opgericht, die de markka opnieuw invoerde als onafhankelijke, door goud gesteunde munt. De gouden standaard werd in 1940 afgeschaft en gedurende de oorlogsjaren onderging de markka hevige inflatie.Omdat de markka door waardedaling te onpraktisch in het gebruik werd, is hij in 1963 vervangen door de nieuwe markka, verdeeld in 100 oude markka.
De naam markka is gebaseerd op een middeleeuwse eenheid van gewicht. Zowel markka als penni zijn leenwoorden die op de Duitse woorden Mark en Pfennig teruggaan.
Gedurende de 140-jarige geschiedenis van de markka zijn 28 verschillende ontwerpen in omloop geweest. Ze zijn in de loop der jaren vervangen maar waren allemaal duidelijk Fins. De Finse markka was sinds 1999 met een vaste wisselkoers gekoppeld aan de euro en bestond dus niet langer als onafhankelijke valuta. De munt werd evenwel pas begin 2002 uit circulatie gehaald. Vanaf 28 februari was de markka geen geldig betaalmiddel meer.

The markka was introduced in 1860 as a quarter of the Russian Ruble. When Finland declared its independence in 1917, the Bank of Finland was established, which reintroduced the markka as an independent gold-backed currency. The gold standard was abolished in 1940 and during the war years the markka underwent severe inflation. Because the markka became too impractical to use due to the depreciation in value, it was replaced in 1963 by the new markka, divided into 100 old markkas.
The name markka is based on a medieval unit of weight. Both markka and penni are loanwords that go back to the German words Mark and Pfennig.
