Postcards from Merelbeke

Merelbeke

Merelbeke has a long history dating back to the early Middle Ages. The name is believed to derive from "Mere" (marsh or water) and "beke" (stream), referring to the watery landscape along the Scheldt River. Its location on the river made the region attractive for agriculture and settlement.

In the Middle Ages, Merelbeke grew into a rural settlement near Ghent. The area belonged to various lordships. Agriculture was the primary source of income for centuries. The proximity to Ghent facilitated trade and exchange.

In the 19th century, Merelbeke gradually changed. The construction of railways and improved roads strengthened the connection with Ghent. This led to population growth and the emergence of small-scale industrial activities alongside agriculture.

During the First World War, Merelbeke saw heavy fighting. In April 1918, fierce fighting took place during the German spring offensive. The village suffered significant damage. The region was also occupied during the Second World War, and the population suffered under the wartime conditions.

After the war, Merelbeke recovered quickly. Due to the expansion of Ghent in the second half of the 20th century, the village increasingly evolved into a residential community. New neighborhoods were added, while the rural character was partly preserved.

Since 2025, Merelbeke has been part of the merged municipality of Merelbeke-Melle. Today, the municipality combines its historical roots with a modern, easily accessible location near Ghent.
