Handicap Internationaal

Handicap International is a non-governmental organization. It was founded in 1982 by two French doctors working in refugee camps in Cambodia.

The organization is best known for its fight against anti-personnel mines and cluster munitions, but its activities are broader. The organization not only provides assistance to people with disabilities in developing countries, it also intervenes in acute emergencies, such as natural disasters and humanitarian crises.

Handicap International tries to prevent disabilities through training, etc., supports people with disabilities and ensures that they can fully participate in social life with their disabilities. The organization works together with local partner organizations so that they can function autonomously in the long term.

After its founding in France in 1982, seven more branches were added: Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, Great Britain, Germany, Canada and the United States (the Belgian branch of Handicap International was founded in 1986).

As co-founder of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Handicap International received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1997.

Broken Chair is a monumental wood sculpture designed by Swiss artist Daniel Berset and built by carpenter Louis Genève. It is made of 5.5 tons of wood and is 12 meters high.
It shows a giant chair with a broken leg, which stands across the street from the Palace of Nations in Geneva. It symbolizes the resistance against landmines and cluster bombs and serves as a reminder for politicians and diplomats visiting Geneva.
