Mahra is a former South Arabian state on the Indian Ocean in the Hadhramaut region. In 1963, the mainly eastern states of the British Aden Protectorate, which did not wish to join the Federation of South Arabia, together formed the Protectorate of South Arabia. Shortly before that, the Sultanate of Mahra had already been controlled by the National Liberation Front, which at the end of 1967 transformed the Federation of South Arabia into the People's Republic of South Yemen.
