About the band name: The English were trying to break through with their band at a time when the record companies were mainly looking for 'spring chicken acts'. To put it in the words of bassist John Waite: 'The record executives simply didn't want to listen to a band if they thought they were making rock music. Teen bands and pre-teen bands , that was all they were interested in.' To mislead the bosses, a 'childish' band name was sought. Names like The Big Babies ('big kids') and The Cry Babies ('crybaby') passed in review until they simply chose The Babys . Waite: 'It was a joke. We thought we could take on a serious name after two weeks.
