Windmills, fishermen's houses and sailing ships painted in blue on white - the typical Delft porcelain sometimes came not only from the flat Dutch countryside, but also from a small town with its narrow alleys nestled against a mountain in the Thuringian Forest.
In 1893 a painter left the Delft factory and started his own business in Germany (Rauenstein) and made these figurines between 1893 and 1920. There was even a lawsuit because the Dutch claimed it was plagiarism, but the factory van Rauenstein won, with a resourceful excuse: they explained that "Delft" is just the abbreviation of "Der Esel läuft fortwährend Trab". . and started making these statues. They were sold in souvenir shops for tourists on the Belgian coast. They can be seen on old postcards depicting the interiors of these shops. They were also sometimes ordered with the name of the city where they were sold. And this with the old spelling, eg: Blankenberhe which is now Blankenberge. The figurines are now on display in the Rauenstein museum.
