Hoewel Oman (hoofdstad Muscate=Masqat) een onafhankelijk sjeikdom was en nog is, was er aanvankelijk geen goed functionerend postvervoer. Daarom namen de Britten het initiatief voor de eerste postagentschappen, niet alleen in Muscate en Oman, maar later ook in andere oliestaatjes zoals Dubai, Qatar, Abu Dhabi, totdat deze gebieden uiteindelijk hun eigen postdienst en postzegeluitgaven begonnen.
LET OP: Officiële zegels hebben altijd de naam "Muscat & Oman" (1966-1970) of "Sultanate of Oman" (1971-heden). Alle uitgaven met de vermelding State of Oman zijn nepzegels van een niet-erkend gebied, die onder "Oman (state of)" geplaatst kunnen worden".
