Gabriel, Peter

Peter Brian Gabriel is a British singer and musician. He is seen as one of the most innovative rock artists of the last decades. Gabriel was considered part of the progressive rock music genre.

Gabriel co-founded the symphonic rock band Genesis in 1967 with Mike Rutherford, Anthony Phillips and Tony Banks. Genesis was a merger of the school bands Anon and The Garden Wall and initially played covers of "The Yardbirds", Otis Redding and "The Rolling Stones" among others. Soon the members of Genesis discovered their talent for writing their own songs, and under production by Jonathan King they released their first album: From Genesis To Revelation . This album flopped. When performing live, Gabriel stood out for his extravagant costumes and his plaintive vocals. After the albums From Genesis To Revelation and Trespass , Anthony Phillips left the band due to stage fright. Guitarist Steve Hackett and drummer Phil Collins were recruited as replacements. Genesis was first successful with Selling England By The Pound (1973). The album spawned the group's first hit single, I Know What I Like . Struggling between Gabriel and the rest of the group during the recording of the concept album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway (1974) eventually led to Gabriel's departure in 1975.

Gabriel's first solo album was recorded in Toronto in 1976 and was released in February 1977. The name of this album, like the next three albums, was simply Peter Gabriel . The work was soon nicknamed Car , after the cover of the LP. Gabriel had no intention of naming his albums any other than Peter Gabriel . The idea behind this was to create a brand and a product with its own identity. The cover of the album is a photo of a Lancia car with raindrops on the windows, with Gabriel staring out.

The single Solsbury Hill became a hit and became one of Gabriel's most played songs, both on stage and on the radio. The song Here Comes The Flood is also taken from this album. It was striking that Gabriel's solo sound was more accessible, less heavy and above all less rock than people were used to from his Genesis time. Tony Levin took care of the bass parts on this album. Levin would always be heard on all of Gabriel's subsequent albums and Levin is still present on the tours to this day. To promote his first solo album, Gabriel toured extensively in 1977 under the name "Expect the Unexpected Tour". A surprising tour for the fans, because Gabriel didn't show off with extravagant costumes like in his Genesis time.

Gabriel's second album was recorded in the spring of 1978, with guitarist Robert Fripp among others. This record, also called Peter Gabriel , became known as Scratch . Gabriel's sound and style had changed compared to the previous album. The sound was much darker than on the first album. The track DIY was released as a single. The cover of Scratch consists of a photo of Gabriel, using his fingers to create tears in the photo. Scratch 's recording was rushed, which Gabriel admitted himself. In 980 the third Peter Gabriel album was released.
His most recent studio album is New Blood from October 2011.

Met Selling England By The Pound (1973) was Genesis voor het eerst succesvol. Het album bracht de groep haar eerste hitsingle, I Know What I Like.
