Initially the band was called The Farriss Brothers , with Andrew (keyboard), Jon (drums) and Tim Farriss (lead guitar), Michael Hutchence (vocals), Kirk Pengilly (saxophone and guitar) and Garry Gary Beers (bass). The name changed that same year to INXS, pronounced "in excess". The name is composed of IXL (a brand of jam) and XTC.

Their first single, Simple Simon (We are the vegetables) , was released in May 1980, with strong ska and punk influences and notable especially for its odd title. Their first Australian hit was Just Keep Walking , a solid rock song that won them a fan base for their debut LP INXS (1980). A second hit album Underneath The Colors (produced by Richard Clapton) was released in 1981.

The third LP, Shabooh Shoobah (1982), on which INXS leans more towards dance rock, ensured that they also became known in the United States. There they got a recording contract with Atlantic in 1983 and their single The One Thing became a big hit, partly because the video clip was shown a lot on MTV. Their participation in the Live Aid concert in 1985 and the release of the album Listen Like Thieves made them known worldwide.

Michael Hutchence was also always the center of attention outside the performances, he had a different model on his arm at every party. Partly due to Michael's charisma and outgoing personality, the 1987 album Kick became a success and the band won all the major awards at the 1988 MTV Awards.

In 1993, after a few less successful albums, INXS returned to the roots of their success, the old circuit: small cafes and clubs where they used to come as the Farriss Brothers. From here arose the much rawer rock album Full Moon, Dirty Hearts (1993). The album did not receive critical acclaim, nor was it a commercial success. The band then called it quits, but Hutchence remained infamous for his affairs, most notably breaking off his relationship with Danish supermodel Helena Christensen and his relationship with Paula Yates, British television presenter and wife of Bob Geldof.

Elegantly Wasted from 1997 became the next album, but Hutchence demanded the most attention. While the band was preparing for another world tour, Hutchence made headlines worldwide in November due to his sudden death. On November 22, 1997, Hutchence was found lifeless in a Sydney hotel room under suspicious circumstances. According to the autopsy report, the cause of death was suicide. Since Hutchence's death, INXS has occasionally performed with Australian singer Jimmy Barnes, Terence Trent D'Arby and Jon Stevens, among others.
