The Atari 2600 is a second generation video game console. In the early 1980s it was the most successful, with its main competitors being the Intellivision, the Videopac consoles and the Colecovision. More

This console was originally called VCS (Video Computer System). The name Atari 2600 only appears later. However, it is customary to classify these systems that are technically identical under the name Atari 2600.

Several models have been marketed.

The first model, the Atari CX2600 " Heavy Sixer " or "Sunnyvale" had six switches on top. It was built in Sunnyvale for only a year (1977).

He was succeeded by the " Light Sixer " . Compared to the Heavy sixer, this one had a thinner black plastic casing

The 'Heavy Sixer' is significantly rarer and more expensive than the 'Light Sixer'.

Later the "4 switch" models appeared where the two difficulty switches were moved to the back.

All these models have a (fake) wooden panel and are therefore also referred to as "wood grain" or "woody".

In 1986 the design was completely revised and the aircraft became much more compact. At that time, the device was already completely surpassed by systems such as Nintendo NES and Sega Master System.
However, Atari continued to market it as a very low priced console (50$) for a (very) young audience. It was therefore given the name "Junior" (Jr) .
