Atari 7800

The Atari 7800 was the successor to the less successful Atari 5200. Unlike the Atari 5200, the 7800 was able to run older 2600 games.

The Atari 7800 was originally supposed to hit the market in 1984, but the acquisition of Atari by Tramiel Technology Ltd. postponed the introduction until 1986.

The Atari 7800 was an 8-bit console that competed against the hugely popular Nintendo NES and (to a lesser extent) the Sega Master System. From a technical point of view, it was equivalent and even superior to its competitors in terms of graphics. However, the special graphics chip (MARIA) made game programming more difficult. Another point of criticism was the sound chip (TIA) that did not improve on the Atari 2600.

The main problem before the breakthrough was the lack of modern games. Nintendo had concluded an exclusivity contract with most game developers, specifying that games developed for the NES could only be released on other consoles after 2 years.
