Ghent is the capital of the Belgian province of East Flanders and of the district of Ghent. Ghent has an area of 156.18 km² and has approximately 250,000 inhabitants, making it the second largest municipality in Belgium in terms of population, after Antwerp. More

Ghent arose from Celtic settlements in the area of the confluence of the Lys and the Scheldt. Ook de vlas- en linnennijverheid en het stapelrecht op graan dat Gent verwierf droegen aanzienlijk bij tot haar welvaart. De patroonheiligen van Gent zijn de heilige Lieven en Pharaïldis. Sint Bavo is de patroonheilige van het bisdom Gent; naar hem is de Sint-Baafsabdij vernoemd.
