Hubuc, pseudonym of Roger Copuse (1926-1970) is a French-speaking Belgian author of historical-humorous comic strips such as Pancho Bomba (Poncho), Tulipe et Minibus, Victor Sébastopol, Mooie Bertje, Chlorophyl and Wilbur and Mimosa. More

Roger Copuse (Hubuc) was born on 21 February 1926 in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, a municipality of Brussels. His first job was as a radio operator on board merchant ships, before joining the Belgian airline Sabena in the early 1960s as a radio officer on the Brussels-New York route. (At that time, the crew of transatlantic aircraft consisted of a radio operator and a flight engineer, in addition to the pilot and co-pilot.) He became a sports journalist under the pseudonym Paul Claudel.

In his spare time he drew and sent his comics to the weekly magazine Spirou (early 1960s) and then, from 1966, to the French comic magazine Pilote (where he worked with Gotlib, Fred, Bob de Groot and Claire Bretécher), under the direction of René Goscinny.

In 1961 he started making stories for the Robbedoes Mini-library.

In 1962 he collaborated with Jacques Devos on Les Mémoires de Victor Sébastopol, an unlikely James Bond of the 1900s, set in the principalities of Central Europe, in the style of an operetta; Ruritania or Syldavia. Victor Sébastopol thinks he is a master spy, while his plans invariably end in dismal failures, provoking a Homeric rage in his superior, Colonel Von Himmerschnaps, the archetype of the military iron-eater of Central Europe. He is easily fooled by the Mata Hari on duty, the enchanting Fraülein Z (a nod to Lady X from the Buck Danny series), who wears an ostrich feather boa in which she hides the trappings of her spy profession.

The mini-series Alertogas and Saxophon, which he later published in Spirou, take us to a fantasy world in ancient Greece, where two proud Greek warriors live: the clever and insignificant little soldier Alertogas and his superior, the big and not so clever Saxophon, a comic-military duo that strongly resembles Corporal Blutch and Sergeant Cornelius Chesterfield in the series Bluecoats, which later appeared in Spirou (Salvérius, Raoul Cauvin and Lambil). The duo Alertogas and Saxophon relive episodes from Greek antiquity (the Odyssey, the Persian Wars, the Olympic Games, etc.) with generally disastrous consequences for the two (anti)heroes.

Together with Pierre Guilmard, Hubuc took over Chlorophylle from Macherot and then wrote the screenplay for Pancho Bomba for Mike in the weekly Tintin magazine.

In 1969 he created These Times Were Hard in Le Soir Illustré. At the end of 1970 he wrote the scenario for the fifteen-page humorous series Égide et le Lithophage (Tintin 45 to 51/1970) for cartoonist Ploeg. This is about a night watchman who sees his museum and the beautiful objects in it being harassed by an alien creature that eats stones.

Roger Copuse-Hubuc died on June 13, 1970 at the age of 44 from leukemia, just when his career was going so well.

We are in Paris in the 17th century. Louis XIV, also known as "the Sun King", reigns.
The streets of Paris were certainly not safe at that time and most doctors were quacks...
In those days full of intrigue, poison was often used. Doctor Lenfandor discovers the formula for the universal antidote.
One of his colleagues, Groténia, steals a bottle of the precious liquid and goes to the king, who is seriously ill. Lenfandor goes after him with Tulip and Minibus and manages to unmask the impostor.... Then it starts raining rewards. Doctor Lenfandor becomes the personal and exclusive physician of the king. Tulipe and Minibus, who were bearers of their chair, become "private bearers of the king" with an income of 1000 écus.
(This little comic strip, now completely forgotten, is a fantasy of Michael Stockdale (Mike) and Hubuc, the brilliant columnist of “Le Travail" in the weekly magazine "Pilote").

Three years later, Tulipe and Minibus return, this time with Claire Brétécher for the drawings, but Hubuc still provides the script.
This second adventure, which sheds new light on one of the great mysteries of royal France, is entitled "le vrai masque de fer".

Tulipe et Minibus was only released as an album in 2006 by Glénat in the compilation Décollage délicat.

Roger Copuse (Hubuc) werd op 21 februari 1926 geboren in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, een Brusselse gemeente. Zijn eerste baan was als radio-operator aan boord van koopvaardijschepen, voordat hij begin jaren zestig bij de Belgische luchtvaartmaatschappij Sabena aan de slag ging als radio-officier op de route Brussel-New York. (In die tijd bestond de bemanning van transatlantische vliegtuigen, naast de piloot en de co-piloot, ook uit een radio-operator en een boordwerktuigkundige.) Hij werd sportjournalist onder het pseudoniem Paul Claudel.

In zijn vrije tijd tekende hij en stuurde hij zijn strips naar het weekblad Spirou (begin jaren zestig) en vervolgens, vanaf 1966, naar het Franse stripblad Pilote (waar hij samenwerkte met Gotlib, Fred, Bob de Groot en Claire Bretécher), onder leiding van René Goscinny.

In 1961 begon hij met verhalen te maken voor de Robbedoes Mini-bibliotheek.

In 1962 werkte hij samen met Jacques Devos aan Les Mémoires de Victor Sébastopol, een onwaarschijnlijke James Bond uit de jaren 1900, dat zich afspeelt in de vorstendommen van Midden-Europa, in de stijl van een operette; Ruritanië of Syldavië. Het duo Alertogas en Saxophon herbeleven episodes uit de Griekse oudheid (de Odyssee, de Perzische Oorlogen, de Olympische Spelen, etc.) met over het algemeen rampzalige gevolgen voor de twee (anti)helden.

Samen met Pierre Guilmard nam Hubuc Chlorophylle over van Macherot en daarna schreef hij het scenario voor Pancho Bomba voor Mike in het weekblad Kuifje.

In 1969 creëerde hij These Times Were Hard in Le Soir Illustré. Eind 1970 schreef hij voor striptekenaar Ploeg het scenario voor de vijftien pagina's tellende humoristische reeks Égide et le Lithophage (Kuifje 45 tot en met 51/1970). Deze gaat over een nachtwaker die zijn museum en de prachtige voorwerpen daarin lastiggevallen ziet worden door een buitenaards wezen dat stenen eet.

Roger Copuse-Hubuc stierf 13 juin 1970 op 44-jarige leeftijd aan leukemie, net toen zijn carrière zo goed ging.

Eén van zijn collega's, Groténia, steelt een fles van de kostbare vloeistof en gaat naar de koning, die ernstig ziek is. Lenfandor gaat met Tulip en Minibus er achteraan en slaagt erin de bedrieger te ontmaskeren.... Dan begint het te regenen van beloningen. Dokter Lenfandor wordt de persoonlijke en exclusieve arts van de koning. Tulipe en Minibus, die dragers van hun stoel waren, worden "privé-dragers van de koning" met een inkomen van 1000 écu.

(Deze kleine strip, nu volledig vergeten, is een fantasie van Michael Stockdale (Mike) en Hubuc, de briljante columnist van “Le Travail" in het weekblad "Pilote”).

Drie jaar later keren Tulipe en Minibus terug, ditmaal met Claire Brétécher voor de tekeningen, maar Hubuc verzorgt nog steeds het script.

Dit tweede avontuur, dat een nieuw licht werpt op een van de grote raadsels van het koninklijke Frankrijk, krijgt de titel "le vrai masque de fer".

Tulipe et Minibus verscheen pas in album in 2006 bij Glénat in de compilatie Décollage délicat.
