Bragg, Billy

Steven William ("Billy") Bragg is an English singer and songwriter who debuted in 1983 with the album "Life's a riot with spy vs. spy". His repertoire moves on the border of folk and punk. He usually performs solo, accompanying himself in punk tradition on a cheap electric guitar. In addition to witty romantic songs about life and love, Bragg also regularly writes protest songs. He considers himself a socialist.

Billy grew up in Barking, near London. Together with lifelong soul mate Wiggy, he learned to play the guitar at an early age by imitating Ron Wood from "The Faces". During the punk wave, Billy and Wiggy formed the band "Riff Raff", which released a few unsuccessful singles. After the breakup of "Riff Raff", Bragg served in the British Army for a blue Monday. He then devoted all his energy to a solo career in music. Because an unknown band usually manages to attract more audiences to a performance than an unknown solo artist, he was sometimes announced under the band name "Spy vs. spy" (after a comic strip in the magazine Mad.) The title of his first (mini) album "Life's a riot with spy vs. spy" recalls this.

Possibly because of Bragg's no-words-but-deeds mentality, his popularity steadily increased. He landed his first record deal by posing as a television repairman so that he could speak to the manager in charge in person. When disc jockey John Peel mentioned that he was hungry during a broadcast, Bragg rushed to the radio studio to offer Peel a snack while promoting his record. He also spent his time in an endless line of performances across England, including regular benefit appearances for striking miners and other political campaigns.

Cover versions of his songs by Kirsty MacColl (A new England) and Paul Young (The man in the iron mask) brought awareness to a wider audience. After "Life's a riot..." Bragg releases two more albums and various EPs on which mainly his voice and guitar can be heard, now and then supplemented with a trumpet or organ part. On "Workers Playtime" (1988) and "Don't Try This at Home" (1991) he is accompanied by a band.

From 1992 to 1996, Bragg interrupted his career to devote himself to fatherhood. This experience is extensively discussed on the album "William Bloke" (1996). Subsequently, at the request of Woody Guthrie's daughter Nora, he devoted himself to putting to music the texts left behind by this folk legend, who died in 1967. The material was released in collaboration with the American band "Wilco" on the records "Mermaid Avenue" (1998) and "Mermaid Avenue II" (2000). This is what the documentary "Man in the Sand" is about. The collaboration within this combination, conceived by a record company, was extremely difficult. Bragg therefore formed the band "The Blokes" to promote the albums. With "The Blokes" he then released an album of his own material in 2002, "England, Half English". From 2003 Billy Bragg could be admired again regularly with solo performances. He also talked a documentary about the life of Woody Guthrie ('This machine kills fascists') together.

2006 saw re-issues of all Bragg's records, accompanied by B-sides and demos. These box sets also include DVDs of live performances, including some behind the Iron Curtain, where Billy was welcomed thanks to his outspoken socialism. In March 2008 a new record was released entitled "Mr Love & Justice".

Life's a riot with spy vs. spy".

De titel van zijn eerste (mini)-album "Life's a riot with spy vs. spy" herinnert hieraan.

Hierover gaat de documentaire "Man in the Sand".
