Eumig was a company focused on Film equipment for 8mm film around the world. locally in Vienna they became known for making radios, hobs, lighters and stoves  More

Eumig

Eumig was founded in 1919 by Ing. Alois Handler and ing. Karl Vockenhuber. the name Eumig is an abbreviation for Electrizitäts und Metallwaren Industrie Geselshaft. as logo, the sign for the root from 3 is initially chosen. Handler focused on the finances and Vockenhuber on the technical side. their first product just after the first world war is a lighter made from a bullet casing. not long after that the production of radios starts. in 1926 Adolph Halpern is bought out and eumig turned into a GMBH. (EumiG MBH)

in 1932 the first film apparatus for 9.5mm film appeared. that same year, kodak introduced 8mm film and in the course of the thirties, eumig also started making 8mm devices.

the war throws a spanner in the works, Austria became part of Germany after the Anschluss and eumig started making weapons of war. eg Mine detonators. the factory in the Buchengasse is also hit by bombs.

to rebuild the factory, a production line for electric stoves and hobs was built up very quickly after the war. Vockenhuber's wife and daughter go door-to-door to collect the money.

up to the 80's it only goes for the wind for eumig, they offer a very wide range of film devices. silent film as well as sound projectors and cameras. a small start is also being made with video cameras. they also enter into a contract with Polaroid to build the polavision system. despite the fact that Karl Vockenhuber Junior sees no point in it, the deal is closed and the system flops.

after a long series of setbacks and missing the Home Video boat, Eumig is declared bankrupt in 1985. various patents are sold to Canon, among others.

Canon.
