Richard Corben was an American cartoonist and comics artist. (October 1, 1940, Anderson, Missouri, United States - December 2, 2020) He is famous for his very idiosyncratic and original SF and horror stories (with his special sense of humor). More

Richard Corben had a long and successful career as a comics artist, but his success didn't come quickly or easily. He was almost thirty years old before he was published in small-circulation publications and eventually by (underground) publishers. In his youth, he read EC Comics, which would inspire his work. But first, Corben worked with his father in construction and spent many years at Calvin Studios, a commercial animation company in Kansas City. He was inspired, among other things, by the EC comics of his youth. His first published work appeared in 1968 in the fanzine Weirdom Illustrated #12, "Monsters Rule." B/W 8 pages – 2 pages appeared in: The 13th Floor #10, circa 1970); Corben confirmed that he submitted the story, but that publication ceased and he never received the pages back. In 1970, Corben finally saved enough money to self-publish three science fiction stories in the first issue of Fantagor, which began as a magazine-sized fanzine. He expected great success, but the book sold poorly (via mail order).

Corben didn't seem particularly interested in the Underground Comix revolution and never felt the urge to move to the West Coast and join the "fight." But Gary Arlington, founder of the legendary San Francisco Comic Book Company, contacted Corben after seeing his work and encouraged him to collaborate with several underground publishers. Corben eventually contributed to several underground publications before Last Gasp reprinted Fantagor #1 in comic book form in late 1971, which sold very well. From 1970 to 1972, Corben produced extensive work for various other underground publishers, including Slow Death and Skull. He developed his own color process, which never yielded the same results.

By working outside of established publishers, Corben had complete freedom and could fully unleash his creativity. Later, people would realize the enormous impact these stories would have in an environment unfettered by commercial pressures. Many consider this "Underground" period to be his best work.
Many underground artists primarily aimed to shock, but Corben used the medium to create his own creative worlds, without outside influence.

Rising paper costs and the Supreme Court's ruling on pornography put underground publishers in financial trouble. To begin with, it was never a well-paying market, but an artist like Corben couldn't sustain it any longer. It marked the end of an era of comics magazines with total artistic freedom, because it was their freedom that truly set them apart from all other publications. An artist or writer creates their best work when they're doing it for themselves, and the underground created precisely that kind of climate. We probably won't see their kind again anytime soon.

Corben's style is unique, simultaneously caricatural and realistic. The bodies of his protagonists are over-proportioned. That is, the men have enormous muscles (and penises), and the women have enormous breasts and buttocks. The facial expressions are spot-on. He often created three-dimensional models of his characters to study the light. He also used grids and airbrushes to achieve the most beautiful graphic results.
His stories can be quite violent, but they always contain a certain kind of humor, and a critique of humanity.

To support himself and his family (his wife Dona and their daughter Beth), Richard Corben was forced to work for the commercial press. This meant that his work was now subject to (self-)censorship and the demands of the popular market.

In 1970, he began illustrating horror and science fiction stories for Warren Publishing. His stories appeared in Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, 1984, and Comix International. He also colored several episodes of Will Eisner's Spirit.

In 1975, when Moebius, Druillet, and Jean-Pierre Dionnet began publishing the magazine Métal Hurlant in France, Corben submitted some of his stories to them, which were published, as Den. He continued his work in America, where the magazine was called Heavy Metal.
In 1976 he adapted a short story by Robert E. Howard; Bloodstar.

The underground period ended here. Richard Corben had become an established name and was now working for official publishers. This meant, however, that the stories lost their spontaneity and were also subject to (self-)censorship due to commercial pressure. Corben continued working until his death in 2020.

Richard Corben heeft een lange en succesvolle carrière als striptekenaar gehad, maar zijn succes kwam niet snel of gemakkelijk. In 1970 had Corben eindelijk genoeg geld gespaard om drie sciencefictionverhalen in eigen beheer te publiceren in het eerste nummer van Fantagor, dat begon als een fanzine op tijdschrift formaat. Hij verwachtte veel succes, maar het boek verkocht slecht (via postorder).

Corben leek niet bijzonder geïnteresseerd te zijn in de Underground Comix-striprevolutie en kreeg nooit de behoefte om naar de westkust te verhuizen en zich bij de ‘strijd’ aan te sluiten. Veel underground artiesten probeerden vooral te choqueren, maar Corben gebruikte het medium om zijn geheel eigen creatieve werelden te scheppen, zonder invloed van buitenaf.

Door stijgende papierkosten en de uitspraak van het Hooggerechtshof over pornografie raakten de underground uitgevers in de financiële problemen. Om te beginnen was het nooit een goedbetaalde markt, maar een kunstenaar als Corben kon het niet langer meer volhouden. Het markeerde het einde van een tijdperk van striptijdschriften met totale artistieke vrijheid, want het was hun vrijheid die hen werkelijk onderscheidde van alle andere publicaties. Een kunstenaar of schrijver maakt zijn beste werk als hij of zij het voor zichzelf doet, en de underground zorgde precies voor dat soort klimaat. Voorlopig zullen we hun soort waarschijnlijk niet meer zien.

Corben’s stijl is uniek. Tegelijkertijd zowel karikaturaal als realistisch. De lichamen van zijn hoofdpersonen zijn over-geproportioneerd. Dat wil zeggen, de mannen hebben enorme spieren (en piemels) en de vrouwen hebben enorme borsten en billen. De gezichtsuitdrukkingen zijn raak getroffen. Hij maakte vaak driedimensionale modellen van zijn personages om de lichtval te kunnen bestuderen. Ook gebruikte hij plakrasters en de airbrush om de mooiste grafische resultaten te bereiken.

Zijn verhalen kunnen behoorlijk gewelddadig zijn, maar bezitten toch altijd een bepaald soort humor, en een kritiek op mensheid.

Richard Corben moest om zichzelf en zijn gezin (zijn vrouw Dona en hun dochter Beth) te kunnen onderhouden wel gaan werken voor de commerciële pers. Wat inhield dat zijn werk voortaan onderhevig was aan (zelf)censuur en de eisen van de populaire markt.

Vanaf 1970 begon hij horror- en sciencefictionverhalen te illustreren voor Warren Publishing. Zijn verhalen verschenen in Creepy, Eerie, Vampirella, 1984 en Comix International. Ook kleurde hij verschillende afleveringen van Will Eisner's Spirit.
