Divide and conquer

We imagine a Roman emperor who dreamed of paganism and that in a period (355-363) in which Christianity already had a lot of power. The Roman worship of gods (e.g. Helios, the sun god, the bringer of light) did not let him go. The ever-advancing Christianity had to be stopped. Then Julianus Apostata (the apostate) might be loved by his men, enemies were waiting for their chance. Or for the purple!

Milius is his loyal friend, but it is clear that we are experiencing the twilight of the Roman Empire. The Golden Age is over. Ken Broeders (Tyndall, The Breath of the Devil, Driftworld) conjures us back in time with beautiful paintings. We have respect for the Germans of Chnodomar and Placidia the Seeress may safely predict our future. We say a friendly hello to Primigenia. Emperor Constantius II understands the danger and even wants the child of the pregnant Helena, the wife of Julian. But the soldiers of Julian proclaim him Caesar Augustus. The Roman Empire suddenly has two emperors!

Julianus Apostata can also be very cruel when he thinks it necessary. His friend Milius is given the order to murder an entire village of Franks without batting an eyelid. It does not yet come to a feared civil war, but the absolute power clearly does Julianus no good. Even his best friends, Oribasius (personal physician) and Milius, can no longer get through to him. Heresy and high treason are words that are circulating. Anyone who knows his history can predict the outcome, but Ken Broeders still manages to surprise us with a beautiful ending!

With this 'other period' we are enthusiastic again. After devouring 'Vae Victis' (Mitton; 1991), 'Alex', 'Murena', 'Eagle of Rome' and watching the series 'Rome' (2005) and 'I, Claudius' (1976) and the films 'Gladiator' (2000) and 'Gladiator II' (2024) we thought we knew everything, but nothing could be further from the truth.

Perhaps another tip for Ken Broeders: a comic about the fall of the Western Roman Empire: the deposition of 'little emperor' Romulus Augustulus (4-9-476) by the barbarian king of Italy, Odoacer (435-493). That could well be the last golden tremissis...

Milius is zijn trouwe vriend, maar het is duidelijk dat we hier de nadagen van het Romeinse Rijk meemaken. De Gouden Tijd is voorbij. Ken Broeders (Tyndall, De Adem van de Duivel, Driftwereld) tovert ons met prachtige schilderijen terug in de tijd. We hebben respect voor de Germanen van Chnodomar en Placidia de Zieneres mag gerust onze toekomst voorspellen. Tegen Primigenia zeggen we vriendelijk goedendag. Keizer Constantius II begrijpt het gevaar en wil zelfs het kind van de zwangere Helena, de vrouw van Julianus. Maar de soldaten van Julianus roepen hem uit tot Caesar Augustus. Het Romeinse Rijk heeft plots twee keizers!

Julianus Apostata kan ook heel wreed zijn als hij het nodig vindt. Zijn vriend Milius krijgt zonder verpinken de opdracht een heel dorp Franken te vermoorden. Tot een gevreesde burgeroorlog komt het nog niet, maar de absolute macht doet Julianus duidelijk geen goed. Zelfs zijn beste vrienden, Oribasius (lijfarts) en Milius, kunnen niet meer tot hem doordringen. Ketterij en hoogverraad zijn woorden die de ronde doen. Wie zijn geschiedenis kent, kan de afloop voorspellen, maar toch weet Ken Broeders ons nog te verrassen met een prachtig slot!

Met deze 'andere periode' zijn we toch weer enthousiast. Na het verslinden van 'Vae Victis' (Mitton; 1991), 'Alex', 'Murena', 'Adelaars Van Rome' en het bekijken van de series 'Rome' (2005) en 'I, Claudius' (1976) en de films 'Gladiator' (2000) en 'Gladiator II' (2024) dachten we immers alles te weten, maar niets was minder waar.

Misschien nog een tip voor Ken Broeders: een strip over de val van het West-Romeinse Rijk: de afzetting van 'keizertje' Romulus Augustulus (4-9-476) door de barbaarse koning van Italië, Odoaker (435-493). Dat zou wel eens de laatste gouden tremissis kunnen worden...
