Philippe Druillet was born in Toulouse on June 28, 1944, the day Philippe Henriot, Secretary of State for Propaganda of the Vichy regime, was murdered by the resistance. It was in tribute to Henriot that the future artist was named Philippe. Both his parents were convinced fascists. His father, Victor Druillet, who had fought alongside Franco in the Spanish Civil War, and his mother, Denise, were also involved in the local Milice, where she held administrative leadership. In August 1944, shortly after Philippe's birth, his parents fled to Sigmaringen in Germany, where Louis-Ferdinand Céline cared for Philippe, who spent 25 days in an oxygen chamber. They subsequently fled to Figueres in Catalonia, Spain, to evade prosecution for collaboration. They were sentenced to death in absentia. It was only later that Philippe Druillet discovered his parents' past.

After the death of his father, Philippe Druillet returned to Paris in 1952. Around the age of thirteen or fourteen, he turned to science fiction and discovered H.P. Lovecraft. In 1963, his grandmother became a concierge at 17 Avenue d'Eylau in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, allowing him to live in a maid's room on the top floor. He also regularly visited the cinema (Das indische Grabmal by Fritz Lang, Hamlet by Laurence Olivier, King Kong by Merian C. Cooper and Ernest B. His first book, Le Mystère des abîmes (The Mystery of the Abyss), published in 1966 by Éric Losfeld, features his recurring hero Lone Sloane in a science fiction story. The Pilote period:
In 1969, he showed a few pages of 'Yragaël' to Jean Giraud, and René Goscinny gave him permission to publish eight pages in the magazine Pilote. This became Lone Sloane, in chapters of eight pages each. He continued the Lone Sloane saga in an increasingly flamboyant style, innovating with increasingly daring page layouts in the second story, Delirius, with a script by Jacques Lob.

Elric de Melniboné
In 1971, Philippe Druillet illustrated a comic adaptation with Michel Demuth of the story of Elric by author Michael Moorcock under the name La Saga d'Elric le nécromancien.
In 1973, Michael Moorcock himself added English text for a British edition, thereby revealing the unauthorized nature of the original French work. (Moorcock's text for the book recounts a brief episode told nowhere else in the Elric Saga: Elric's return to the town of Imrryr after a year of traveling through the Young Kingdoms). The publisher Bill Butler of Unicorn Books printed the portfolio containing Druillet's drawings (500 copies) under the title Elric: The Return to Melnibone. Ironically, given Butler's unauthorized use of his plates, Druillet threatened legal action for copyright infringement. A meeting was hastily arranged in France between Moorcock and Druillet, where it was ultimately agreed not to reprint the English edition rather than pursue costly legal action.

Métal Hurlant and Les Humanologisches Associés
In 1974, following disagreements with the editors of Pilote, he left the magazine and, together with Giraud and Jean-Pierre Dionnet, founded the monthly magazine Métal Hurlant and the publishing house Les Humanoïdes Associés.

The Night
This album, published in 1976, marks a turning point in Druillet's work, as it is closely linked to his experience of accompanying his wife during her illness, until her death[7].
Graphically very successful, the album is characterized by innovative and highly effective coloring and panel layout, which tell a story of despair. For the artist, deeply affected by the death of his wife, the book, dedicated to her, was a way to process his grief.
Of all Druillet's universes, La Nuit is probably the darkest, the most nihilistic. The story depicts the struggle of a disturbed humanity, organized into anarchist gangs heavily under the influence of drugs, who must conquer the "blue depot," the fantastic source of all the drugs that enable these near-zombies to survive in this world of madness. These gangs have a rock 'n' roll vibe; they embody freedom, anarchism, and the will to live. On the other hand, they will have to defy the representatives of order and of nothingness to reach the blue depot. There will be no happy ending. Quite the opposite, in fact.

Salammbo
In 1980, Druillet published Salammbô, a trilogy inspired by Gustave Flaubert's novel of the same name. The story combines pure fantasy with fidelity to Flaubert's tale. Indeed, apart from the introduction explaining Lone Sloane's presence in the world of Salammbô and the conclusion preventing Sloane's complete destruction, the entire story follows the original novel closely, with long passages even reproduced verbatim.
