Joann Sfar was born on August 28, 1971 in Nice. He grows up in the Jewish culture, learns Hebrew and the Torah, but goes to a state school. Already at a young age he writes and draws comics, under the pseudonym "sofer" (Hebrew for writer). From the age of 15, he sends a monthly project for a comic to various publishers, which is refused time and again. Later he meets Fred, Baudoin et Pierre Dubois, who become his spiritual fathers.
After a master's degree in philosophy from the University of Nice, he enrolled at the Beaux Arts in Paris, where he specialized in morphology. In 1993 he went to the Nawak studio (later the Studio des Vosges), where he met Lewis Trondheim, David B., Jean-Christophe Menu, Emmanuel Guibert, Christophe Blain, Emile Bravo and Marjane Satrapi.
He made his debut with L'Association in 1994 with "Noyé le poisson". Since then, he has built up an extensive and original oeuvre as a draftsman and scriptwriter for publishers such as L'Association, Cornélius, Dargaud, Delcourt and Dupuis. In 1998, at the Angoulême comics festival, he won both the Alph'Art Coup de Coeur and the Prix Goscinny for "The Professor's Daughter". Since 2005, he has been conducting the Bayou Collection at Gallimard publishing house.
Joann Sfar has also been a filmmaker since 2010. He directs the film "Gainsbourg (vie héroïque)" and participates in the cartoon based on his story "The Rabbi's Cat".
