In the meantime he switched from the double bass to the bass guitar.

During this period he became a member of the jazz fusion band Return to Forever , led by pianist Chick Corea. The band became one of the most successful jazz rock bands of this period. In addition, Clarke also worked on his solo career and released a series of albums under his own name. School Days (1976) is the best known of these. This album, along with Jaco Pastorius' debut album, is considered the best bass album in the history of jazz.

During the 1980s, Clarke formed Animal Logic with drummer Stewart Copeland and singer-songwriter Deborah Holland. The trio achieved success with their first album and the following tour, but the next album sold poorly and the band decided to stop. In 2002, he founded the Stanley Clark Foundation to support emerging musicians.
