Valentina is the heroine of a comic strip written and drawn by the Italian Guido Crepax (pseudonym of Guido Crepas). It was published from 1965 (Linus no. 2) to 1993 (Corto Maltese no. 118). More

Valentina is a fictional character from the eponymous comic series, created by Guido Crepax in 1965. The series has a cinematic, often dreamlike style and is filled with quotations ranging from history to art and even comics. The artist's hallmark is the refined combination of all sorts of detailed images. A reference to optical art, typical photographic sequences, multiple shots, and the framing of details. Many plates are indeed collages of evocative close-ups, enlargements of details where the few lines, the contrasts of black and white, recall the photographic test sheet, where the negatives are placed on a sheet of photographic paper so that all the photos can be assessed at a glance. The character made her debut in 1965 in the magazine Linus, initially intended for the role of a secondary character, in the third installment of the science fiction comic series 'La curva di Lesmo', which featured the character Neutron (alias Philip Rembrandt), whose girlfriend is Valentina, but who soon becomes the protagonist of the series.

Valentina Rosselli is a young and graceful woman who, according to Guido Crepax, was born in Milan in 1942. As a professional photographer, she works independently, allowing her to work in a wide variety of environments. During her travels, she meets Neutron, a curious figure gifted with supernatural powers, who turns out to be Philip Rembrandt, an American art critic and, in his spare time, a criminologist. He became her husband, and together they had a son, Mattéo, born in 1971. Eleven years later, while Italy was facing the rise of the Red Brigades, Mattéo died in an attack.

Inspired by the author's wife, Luisa Mandelli, Valentina is a brunette with short hair and a boyish look. She is an elegant, intelligent, and liberated woman who gives free rein to her fantasies. With this slender and almost asexual character, Guido Crepax appeals to an intellectual and sophisticated audience far removed from popular erotic productions and the busty women they present. Valentina doesn't hesitate to delve into her subconscious and live out her erotic, sadomasochistic fantasies, populated by 18th-century Spanish squires or perverted Nazi officers.

Valentina is about twenty years old at the beginning of her adventures and ages over the episodes, along with her author, becoming a middle-aged woman who has lost none of her sensuality. Guido Crepax declared: "When I was a child, I hated the fact that comic book characters never age." In 1996, he ended his heroine's career in an episode he called "To the devil with Valentina!" (Al diavolo, Valentina).

She is one of the few characters in the history of Italian comics about whom everything is known, including her identity card: she was born on Christmas Day 1942 (just like Luisa Mandelli, Crepax's wife), even her place of residence is the same, an apartment in via De Amicis in Milan, and she ages like a real person.

In an episode dedicated to her childhood, Valentina reveals that in her late adolescence she adopted Lulu's appearance, inspired by a film starring Brooks, Pandora's Box (a 1928 silent film by Pabst).

Like other characters in comics and literature, Valentina draws on real or even autobiographical elements. She bears a strong resemblance to our mother, Luisa. Aside from their physical appearance, Valentina and Luisa dressed alike. They also shared the same ideas. Like our mother, Valentina is shy and reserved. However, other aspects of her character stem from our father himself: social and political engagement, the capacity for indignation, a free spirit, a fight against censorship, and a curious blend of exhibitionism and shyness. As for the inspiration for diva Louise Brooks, initially, there wasn't any physical resemblance intended. When our father subsequently watched Louise Brooks' films, he was influenced by the striking similarities of the character in the cinema. He was searching for an image of a woman that was very different from what was fashionable at the time: that is, the blonde with blue eyes, narrow hips, and a large bust—the body of a Brigitte Bardot or Ursula Andress. Our father wanted to draw a woman who had both a masculine component (short hair, enterprising, and unscrupulous) and simultaneously a healthy dose of femininity (both physical and spiritual). These seemingly contradictory aspects of the character coexist in Valentina.

She drove our car and lived in an apartment identical to ours. The heroine also had our address and phone number! Our father always preferred to stage the interiors of houses he knew well. That's why he drew Valentina and Philip Rembrandt just as easily in our apartment as in our vacation home. They were the same doors, the same handles, the same antiques mixed with modern furniture that was fashionable at the time. The explanation for all this is that our father didn't have a workspace outside the home. Our father's studio was a room in our house. As the writer Emilio Salgari said, Guido Crepax was a "motionless" traveler. He drew all his inspiration from these interiors, which he saw daily with his family. We often called our father a "loving vampire" because it was as if he sucked the juice from our lives to rework everything in his often fantastic dimension. Indeed, it is "our" terrace where Valentina receives an extraordinary and mysterious visit from a silent man who has fallen from space.

The erotic element in Valentina's adventures takes place primarily in her fantasies. Submission, sadism, torture, and generally erotic excesses frequently appear in Valentina's dreams, but their value is primarily symbolic and aesthetic. Our father had read and borrowed countless ideas from Sigmund Freud's "The Interpretation of Dreams" (1899). He therefore wanted to represent the secret desires of a woman who, in real life, is very free and dominant, while in her erotic fantasies she chooses to be submissive or abused. Initially, the deeper meaning of these representations was not understood, especially by women active in feminist movements. They saw these ideas as the very masculine and sexist desire projected onto women, as objects. Subsequently, the very feminists who had initially been highly critical realized that these fantasies coincided with those of many women. The latter might very well choose to be the object in a very private, erotic environment. This didn't contradict the fact that in their real lives they were free and uninhibited, and in control of their own bodies.

The character has also been used in advertising. In 1973, she became the lead of a feature film and in 1989, of a television series:

Baba Yaga (1973): A feature film written and directed by Corrado Farina, starring Isabelle de Funès as Valentina. The film was criticized by the director himself for the cuts made by the production without his knowledge, but an American edition exists on DVD in which much of the excised material has been recovered.

Valentina is een fictief personage uit de gelijknamige stripreeks, gemaakt door Guido Crepax in 1965. Publicaties:

De serie werd in de jaren zeventig ook gepubliceerd in Japan in het tijdschrift Woo en in Argentinië, waar Valentina's verhalen (omgedoopt tot Neutron) sinds het eerste nummer in november 1968 zijn verschenen in LD-Literatura Dibujada.

In Frankrijk verscheen het in het maandblad Hara-Kiri vanaf juni 1968 (nr. 81) en vervolgens in Charlie Mensuel vanaf oktober 1970 (nr. 21).

Als albums uitgegeven door Losfeld (1969), Dargaud (1983), Futuropolis (1985 tot 1986) en Albin Michel (1991).

In Nederland verscheen een album bij Kartoen (V42) De toverlantaarn in 1981.

Van 1986-1987 verschenen 6 albums bij uitgeverij Sombrero: (V23) Baba Yaga, (V24) Blauwbaard, (V25) De ontvoering van Mattia, Op weg naar de allerhoogste, (V28) Het koningskind, (V27) De onversaagde Valentina.
