Mike Oldfield

Oldfield, Mike

Michael Gordon Oldfield is a British pop musician. In his youth, Oldfield made music with his sister, singer Sally, who would continue to feature in his later work. With her, he formed the folk duo The Sallyangie . In 1969, the duo released the LP Children of the Sun ; Mike was sixteen at the time. He then played with his brother Terry for a short period in a blues trio called Barefoot . Shortly afterwards, he became a member of Kevin Ayers' band "The Whole World", in which he played bass and guitar and sometimes sang.

Oldfield's big breakthrough came in 1973 with the LP Tubular Bells , on which he played almost all the instruments himself. This album without lyrics or separate songs contains a mix of different styles with which Oldfield would also experiment in the rest of his career: rock, new age, folk, ambient and blues. Later, African styles and influences from electronic dance music also came to the fore.

Tubular Bells was released by Virgin Records, Richard Branson's then fledgling record company. Branson ran a recording studio at the time, "The Manor House", where Tubular Bells was recorded. Because none of the record companies approached saw any sales for Tubular Bells , Branson decided to set up his own Virgin Records and Tubular Bells became the first album on it.

In 1974, the album Hergest Ridge followed, composed in Herefordshire on a ridge of the same name. The album reached number one in the British charts, with Tubular Bells taking this position three weeks later. The albums The Orchestral Tubular Bells (1975), Ommadawn (1975), Incantations (1978) and Platinum (1979) followed in the 1970s.

In the 1980s he scored a few hits with accessible songs such as Moonlight Shadow (1983) and To France (1984). Both songs feature vocals by Maggie Reilly.

In 1984, Oldfield wrote the soundtrack for "The Killing Fields". With this soundtrack he was nominated for a "Golden Globe". His video album Islands was released in 1987 and was provided with modern video animations for that time.

Given limited recording time by Branson, Tubular Bells was recorded in great haste, which is evident in the simple arrangement and occasional false notes. Because Oldfield was contractually prohibited from making another recording for 25 years, he released Tubular Bells II (1992), a successful album structured similarly to his debut. It was Oldfield's first album on a new label: Warner Music. In 2003, a re-recorded version of Tubular Bells was released under the title Tubular Bells 2003 , in celebration of the original's 30th anniversary. The opening theme of Tubular Bells has become one of Oldfield's best-known songs. This song remains very popular, partly due to its use in the horror film "The Exorcist".

In 2002, Oldfield experimented with 3D virtual reality, a project called "Music VR" in which music plays an important role. The Tres Lunas, released that year, contains an audio CD as well as the game of the same name. Tres Lunas was followed by Maestro (2003), a new virtual epic. This game was available for download from Oldfield's official website. No audio CD of Maestro was released.

In late September 2005, Oldfield released the 2-CD Light and Shade on his third label Mercury Records.

An autobiography, entitled "Changeling", was published by Virgin Books in May 2007, just before Oldfield's 54th birthday.

In 2008, Oldfield was given back the rights to his albums released on Virgin Records, 35 years after the release of his debut album Tubular Bells . Since 2009, remixed and remastered editions of these albums, including much bonus material, have been released on Mercury Records. Tubular Bells was the first to be released, with a new edition of that album appearing in June 2009.

Oldfield performed at the opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics.

His most recent studio album is called Man on the Rocks and dates from January 2014. Six years after the classically tinged Music of the Spheres , Mike Oldfield returns to rock versions. Man on the Rocks is a production that recalls the sounds of the late 1970s and early 1980s. He plays many instruments here, but mainly focuses on guitar. Among his collaborators are bassist Leland Sklar, keyboardist Matt Rollings, drummer John Robinson, guitarist Michael Thompson and singer Luke Spiller.

Zijn meest recente studio-album heet Man on the Rocks en dateert van januari 2014.
