Tin Machine

Tin Machine was a band that consisted of David Bowie, guitarist Reeves Gabrels, bassist Tony Sales and drummer Hunt Sales. The band was active between 1988 and 1992 and did not become a commercial success. The band came into being as a response from Bowie to the disappointing reviews of the album Never Let Me Down and his desire to make music again for himself and not for the masses.

The Sales brothers knew Bowie as former guitarists for Iggy Pop from the time they spent a year as keyboardist in Iggy's band in 1977.

Tin Machine released the album Tin Machine in 1989, in which Bowie showed that he had had enough of radio-friendly pop music and large-scale tours and shifted his course to harder, if somewhat conventional, rock. Tin Machine was more of a hobby band for Bowie and they performed on smaller music venues. This was a disappointment for many Bowie fans, because in addition to the small dimensions of such halls, relatively many tickets went to the press and people invited by the record company. Opinions of the public and press about the band and the album were divided and the reason for the formation of the band was not understood by some, but Tin Machine heralded the beginning of a collaboration between Bowie and Gabrels that lasted until the end of would last into the 1990s. The first Tin Machine album therefore received little attention.

In 1991 the album Tin Machine II was released. This album was also received with mixed feelings by the critics. While the album featured some particularly strong Bowie songs, such as Baby Universal , You Belong In Rock'n Roll , and Goodbye Mr. Ed , the songs Stateside and Sorry sung by drummer Hunt Sales were seen as a low point in Bowie's career. Notable on the CD is Amlapura sung in Indonesian - the second time Bowie has sung a song in Indonesian, after the Indonesian version of Don't Let Me Down . The album was supported with a tour (live recordings from this tour appeared on the 1992 album Oy Vey, Baby ). Subsequently, the band was unofficially disbanded.
