The company Kadee started in 1940 and is known for its automatic claw couplings for all scales. In America they have become the standard. Kadee also manufactured freight wagons in H0 and N. In 1992 the company was split. Kadee for H0 and Micro-T  More

Kadee

The Kadee brand is derived from the names of twin brothers Keith and Dale Edwards. In 1940 they started making kits for turnouts in Los Angeles. After the war, Keith became a member of a model train club. That's where the idea was born to make a real-looking coupling. To make the molds he asked the help of his brother Dale who had experience with this. Together they designed the new clutch that came on the market around 1951. It immediately became a great success. In 1955 they moved to Medford where they built a factory hall. From 1955, all brands started using a standard claw coupling, which reduced sales of the Kadee coupling. Fortunately, the brothers developed a magnetic clutch that could disengage. That became the Magne-Matics coupling, made for all scales. It eventually became the standard in America. In the meantime, cars were also produced for H0. Keith was interested in a smaller scale when the Casey Jones Micro Trains brand of Sweden with American models 1:150 came on the market. When that company ran into financial difficulties, Kadee bought the remainders with the aim of producing models with a smaller scale. Because the standard was set at 1:160 in Europe in the early 1960s, he could not use the Swedish models and Kadee developed its own wagons for gauge N. In 1972, the first model came with the brand name Kadee Micro-Trains. In 1983 narrow gauge N was taken over from Nelson Gray. In the same year, gauge Z was also introduced. In 1991 the brothers went their separate ways and the company was split up. The Kadee brand was for Dale with gauge H0 and larger and the Micro-Trains brand kept Keith for gauge N and smaller.

The brand name Kadee is derived from the names of the twin brothers Keith and Dale Edwards. In 1940 they started making turnout kits in Los Angeles. After the war Keith joined a model railroad club. There the idea was born to design a H0 coupler that looked like the real thing. For manufacturing the dies he asked his brother Dale who a tool and die maker, to help him out. Together they produced the new coupler and sales started in 1951. It instantly became a great success. In 1955 they moved to Medford where they built a new plant. From 1955 onwards all producers started to use a horn-hook couplers of their own design which hurted sales of the Kadee coupler. It was luck that the brothers were developing a coupler that could be magnetically uncoupled. It became today's Magne-Matics coupler made for all scales. Eventually it became the standard coupler in America. In the meantime Kadee also produced freight cars in H0. Keith became interested in a smaller scale when Case Jones Micro Trains from Sweden entered the market with American models in 1:150. When this firm ran into economic difficulties Kadee bought the remaining stock and the rights in order to introduce themselves models at a smaller scale. However, in Europe in the early 60s the standard scale was laid down at 1:160, so they could not use the Swedish models and Kadee developed their own freight cars for N gauge. In 1972 the first model arrived named Kadee Micro-Trains. In 1983 narrow gauge N was taken over from Nelson Gray. In the same year gauge Z was introduced. In 1991 it was all over between the brothers and the firm was divided. The brand name Kadee was for Dale with gauge H0 and larger, and the brand name Micro Trains was kept by Keith for N gauge and smaller.
