Postcards from Pula

Pula is one of the oldest cities on the Adriatic coast, with a history dating back over 3,000 years. According to tradition, the city was originally founded by Illyrians (an ancient Balkan people) and later colonized by the Greeks.

In the 1st century BC, Pula became a Roman colony (Colonia Pietas Iulia Pola) and developed into an important regional centre. Many monuments that can still be seen today date from this period, such as: The Roman amphitheatre (Arena di Pula): one of the best preserved amphitheatres in the world, the Temple of Augustus and Roman city gates, and remains of forums and baths.

After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, Pula came under the influence of various powers, including: the Eastern Roman (Byzantine) Empire, the Lombards and later the Franks.

From the 13th century under Venetian rule, which would remain for centuries. Much of the city walls and Venetian architecture date from this period.

In 1797, after the fall of Venice, Pula came under the Habsburg Empire (later Austria-Hungary). During this period, Pula became the main naval port of Austria-Hungary, which led to industrial and urban growth.

After WWI, Pula became Italian (1918–1947) and after WWII, it became part of Yugoslavia.
Since 1991, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, Pula has been part of independent Croatia.

Pula is today a major tourist destination with a rich heritage, a lively port and access to national parks and islands. The combination of Roman ruins, Venetian influences and Habsburg architecture makes it a unique cultural mix.
