De afschaffing gebeurde verschillend van provincie tot provincie, tussen 1986 en 1991, vreemd genoeg niet om een principiële redenen, maar omdat de productiekosten niet opwogen tegen de inkomsten, en er bovendien een zeer grote weerstand was tegen verhoging van de belasting.

Het is in de provincieraadszitting van 18 juli 1893 dat er in Limburg een "Provinciaal Reglement op de Wielrijders" wordt goedgekeurd. De voornaamste bedoeling is de inkomsten van de provincie te vermeerderen. De provinciale taks, gesteld vanaf 1 januari 1894, bedraagt 10 fank voor alle inwoners van Limburg, ten volle 12 jaar oud zijnde, die een rijwiel op de openbare weg gebruiken. De inwoners, die tenminste drie opeenvolgende maanden in Limburg verblijven, dienen de taks te betalen in de gemeente waar de wielrijder verblijft. Wie wegens weigering of nalatigheid de taks niet betaalt of het kwijtschrift van betaling niet kan tonen, kan beboet worden met twintig frank of twee dagen gevang. Enkel personen die zich van een rijwiel bedienen "voor eenen openbaren dienst" zijn ontslagen. Maar - dat zal achteraf blijken - ook niet allemaal.
