Ann Seton was the daughter of British naturalist Ernest Thompson Seton and American travel writer Grace Gallatin Seton. She grew up in Cos Cob, Connecticut. Anya Seton was the pseudonym of Ann Seton Chase. She was an American author of historical novels or, as she called them, "Biographical Novels".

Anya Seton's historical novels are laced with historical facts that she researched intensively. Some of her novels became best-sellers, such as "Dragonwyck" (1944) and "Foxfire" (1950), both of which were made into movies. Three of her books are considered "classics" in the genre and are still very popular today: "Katherine", the story about Katherine Swynford, the mistress and later wife of John of Gaunt and their children who were the direct ancestors of the Tudors, Stuarts and the modern British Royal Family; "Green Darkness", a story about a modern couple plagued by incarnations from the past, and "The Winthrop Woman" about the famed Elizabeth Fones, niece and daughter-in-law of John Winthrop, the first governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Most of her novels have been recently republished, several with a foreword by Philippa Gregory, a British author of historical novels and novellas. In 2003, the novel "Katherine" was voted the 95th best novel of all time in a national poll organized by the BBC.

Seton married twice. First with Hamilton Cottier, with whom she had two children: Pamela and Seton Cottier. Her second marriage was to Hamilton (Chan) M. Chase in 1930. They had one daughter: Clemency.

Ann Seton died in Old Greenwich, Connecticut. She is buried in Putnam Cemetery in Greenwich.
