The Tavares brothers began performing as Chubby and the Turnpikes in 1963, when the youngest brother was thirteen. Before this, the brothers sang with their father while he accompanied them with his guitar. He sang Cape Verdean world music. That changed when stepbrother John brought his record player with Temptations and Four Tops records to the Tavares family. For years they performed as Chubby and the Turnpikes before taking their family name as the group name in 1971 after a tour in Italy. Lola Falana and Leroy Gomez were on that tour, with the latter remaining in Europe. In 1973, the band signed to Capitol Records, after which they scored their first hit ( Check it Out ). Brother Victor also participated during the recording of their first album, but he left the group not much later.

1975 turned out to be a good year for the band. They made an album that included hits such as Heaven Must Be Missing an Angel , a number 1 hit in multiple countries and Don't Take Away The Music . Because many of their hits had an R&B background, this gave the group the image of a disco act. This image was reinforced when Tavares collaborated on the soundtrack of the 1977 film "Saturday Night Fever". The group recorded the song More Than a Woman (originally by the Bee Gees). The soundtrack was very successful. It earned Tavares their only Grammy Award.
