Dit gebied in Oost-Afrika werd als eerste door Duitsland gekoloniseerd (zie Duitse koloniën - Duits Oost-Afrika). Na de Eerste Wereldoorloog verkreeg Groot-Brittannië het mandaat, onder de naam Tanganyika. In eerste instantie werden zegels van "East Africa and Uganda Protectorates" gebruikt, overdrukt met "G.E.A." voor German East Africa. Tussen 1922 en 1935 werden voor het eerst zegels met het opschrift Tanganyika toegepast. Na een postale unie met Kenya en Uganda werden tussen 1935 en 1961 zegels van de Oost-Afrikaanse Gemeenschap gebruikt (zie aldaar). In 1961 werd het gebied onafhankelijk van Groot-Brittainië en werden weer zegels met opschrift Tanganyika ingevoerd. In 1964 fuseerde het land met Zanzibar, onder de naam Tanzania (zie aldaar).

F – Durant la première guerre mondiale, en janvier 1915, l’île de Mafia qui faisait partie de l’Afrique orientale allemande, fut capturée par les Britanniques des Allemands. A la fin de guerre, l’île et une partie de l’Afrique orientale allemande devinrent, suite au Traité de Versailles, un territoire britannique sous mandat de la Société des Nations.
E - During the First World War, in January 1915, Mafia Island, which was part of German East Africa, was captured by the British from the Germans. At the end of the war, the island and part of German East Africa became a British territory under the mandate of the League of Nations following the Treaty of Versailles.
