Jacques Ferrandez, born in Algiers in 1955 but raised in Nice, is a French comics author, illustrator, and jazz double bassist. He is best known for the series about French colonial Algeria, "Carnets d'Orient." More

Jacques Ferrandez was born in Algiers on December 12, 1955; three months later his family left Algeria because of the uprising against colonial rule and settled in Nice.
Ferrandez's paternal family is of Spanish descent. His paternal grandfather arrived in Algiers in 1880, and his father was a doctor.

Jacques Ferrandez, trained at the National School of Decorative Arts in Nice, began his career as a comics artist in issue 4 of the new monthly magazine (À suivre) launched in 1978 by the Casterman publishing house.

He started with a number of complete stories written for him by screenwriter Rodolphe (Rodolphe Daniel Jacquette, 1948) and published six stories in (À suivre) between 1978 and 1981, six stories in Métal hurlant between 1981 and 1984 and finally six stories around the character of the Vicomte in Pilote in 1984 and 1985. These different stories were collected and published in albums under the titles L'Heure du loup by Éditions du Cygne in 1981, Outsiders by Les Humanoïdes associés in 1985 and Le Vicomte by Dargaud in 1986.

The two authors simultaneously published their first long story, in black and white, L'Homme au bigos (The Man with the Claw), published in Télérama in the summer of 1980 and then in an album published by Les Humanoïdes associés in November of the same year. The sequel, Le Maître de la nuit (The Master of the Night), also in black and white, was published in Métal hurlant in the spring of 1982 and then as an album in September. Ferrandez's style at that time was close to that of Jacques Tardi. This diptych later formed the series Les Enquêtes du commissaire Raffini (Commissioner Raffini), of which Jacques Ferrandez illustrated two more volumes (including Villa Donkere) before retiring in 1988.

For the monthly magazine Circus, the two authors created the series Anne et Charles, of which only two episodes were published in 1982 and 1984 and issued in albums by Glénat in 1983 and 1985.

Provence
During this period of collaboration with Rodolphe, Jacques Ferrandez began writing his own scripts, tackling more personal themes with short stories describing village life in the Provençal hinterland, published in (À suivre) in 1981 and edited in albums by Casterman in 1982 and 1986 (Achterland, Casterman 1982).

He then adapted Marcel Pagnol's novels Jean de Florette and Manon des sources into comics in 1997.
He also adapted Jean Giono's novel Le Chant du monde in 2019.

Narrator of Algeria
Jacques Ferrandez, very interested in relations between France and Algeria, questions "the failures in our shared history" and has also adapted novels by "authors who span both countries", such as Albert Camus, Mohamed Fellag and Maurice Attia.

Thus began a long saga of historical comics, initially planned for five volumes and eventually published in ten parts between 1986 and 2009, entitled Oriental Journal (Carnets d'Orient), about the history of the French presence in Algeria from 1836 to 1962. The series was first published in the magazine Corto Maltese and then appeared in (À suivre). In this long, well-documented saga, Ferrandez strives to convey the point of view of the various characters: the native inhabitants, the colonists, the soldiers and peasants, the Muslims, the Christians, and the Jews.

Jacques Ferrandez, who had never been to Algeria since he left at the age of three months, returned there for the first time in 1993 after his father's death that same year, by boat from Marseille for emotional reasons. From this stay, he brought back a notebook of memories and drawings, "Retours à Alger," created with Rachid Mimouni. Since 2002, he has returned to Algeria regularly, about twice a year, to meet friends and participate in cultural events organized by the Institut Français, such as the Salon international du livre de Algiers, although several of his albums were not published in Algeria due to "lack of import visas" ("another word for censorship").

In addition to Oriental Diary, Jacques Ferrandez regularly worked on illustrations for travel diaries: Voyage en Syrie (1999), Istanbul (2000), Irak, 10 ans d'embargo avec Alain Dugrand (2001), Liban (2001), Les tramways de Sarajevo in 2005, Retours à Alger in 2006.

In May 2012, the Army Museum dedicated an exhibition to the history of colonial Algeria from 1830 to 1962. Ferrandez's illustrations took pride of place there.

Jacques Ferrandez subsequently adapted works by Albert Camus set in Algeria, first the short story L'Hôte in 2009, then the novel L'Étranger (The Stranger) in 2013 and Le Premier Homme in 2017.

The ghost of Albert Camus, Ferrandez's grandmother's neighbor in Algiers, was omnipresent in his family memories and then firmly established itself when Ferrandez discovered the novel L'Hôte. Catherine Camus, Albert Camus's daughter, knew Ferrandez's work and allowed him to adapt it; the graphic novella was published in 2009. L'Étranger followed in 2013, and then Le Premier Homme, Camus's unfinished novel, which he had in his bag during the car accident that took his life in 1960.

Albert Camus's final book, "Le Premier Homme," was born from a tragedy and a miracle. On January 4, 1960, after a pleasant lunch in the French countryside, Albert Camus and his friends set off for Paris. His publisher, Michel Gallimard (cousin of publisher Gaston Gallimard), was driving his Facel Vega. Near the village of Sens, on Route Nationale 5, the car crashed into a plane tree at high speed. Albert Camus was killed instantly. Michel died a few days later. Janine, Michel's wife, and Anne, their daughter, survived the accident. Their dog, Floc, disappeared into the woods.
The remains of the car were scattered over a distance of about ten meters. Among the wreckage, a still-intact leather briefcase was found. Inside were 144 pages of an autobiographical manuscript titled "Le Premier Homme." Francine Camus (Albert's wife) felt it inappropriate to publish the text due to the ongoing conflict in Algeria. Thirty-four years passed. Catherine Camus, daughter of Albert and Francine, decided to undertake the colossal task of deciphering the nearly illegible handwriting of her father's manuscript and publishing it in its raw form.

In collaboration with the writer Maurice Attia, he adapted Alger la Noire (Casterman, originally published by Actes Sud) in 2012.

Twelve years after completing the Carnets d'Orient, Jacques Ferrandez followed up with Suites algériennes, a diptych, the first part of which was published in May 2021 and the second in April 2023, thus putting an end, at least temporarily, to the Carnets d'Orient.
Jacques Ferrandez did not rule out that he would continue the series at some point.

Verteller van Algerije

Jacques Ferrandez, is zeer geïnteresseerd in de betrekkingen tussen Frankrijk en Algerije, stelt "de mislukkingen in onze gemeenschappelijke geschiedenis" ter discussie en bewerkte ook romans "auteurs die beide landen overspannen", zoals Albert Camus, Mohamed Fellag en Maurice Attia.
