Stamps from Straits Settlements

The Straits Settlements were British territories in Southeast Asia and originally consisted of Malacca, Penang and Singapore on the Malay Peninsula. In 1867, the Straits Settlements, previously under the control of the British East India Company, were converted into a British Crown Colony. From then on, the Crown Colony issued its own postage stamps. Before that, British Indian stamps were used. The Sultanate of Perak ceded Dinding to the Straits Settlements in 1874. In 1888, the Cocos Islands and Christmas Island were added to the Straits Settlements. In 1906, the British Crown Colony of Labuan was also added to the Straits Settlements. In 1937, Dinding was returned to Perak. During World War II, the Straits Settlements, except the Cocos Islands, were occupied by Japan: from late 1941 Labuan and Penang and early 1942 Malacca, Singapore and Christmas Island. Japanese occupation stamps were issued, consisting of overprints on residual stocks of Malaysian stamps, which can be found under "Japan - Occupation of Malaysia".

After the liberation in 1945, the British Military Administration of Malaya issued postage stamps for the British Crown Colony of the Straits Settlements (Singapore, Malacca and Penang) and the British protectorates of the Federated Malay States (Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan and Pahang) and the Unfederated Malay States (Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu). However, Labuan came under the British Military Administration of Borneo and was united with the British Protectorate of North Borneo in 1946. In 1946, the areas under the British Military Administration of Malaya were united into the British colony of the Union of Malacca, with the exception of Singapore, which together with Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands became a separate British Crown Colony. However, the postage stamps of the British Military Administration continued to be used in Singapore and the Union of Malacca for the time being. In 1948, the Union of Malacca was transformed into the Federation of Malacca, comprising the Crown Colonies of Malacca and Penang and the Protectorates of Selangor, Perak, Negeri Sembilan, Pahang, Johor, Kedah, Kelantan, Perlis and Terengganu. From 1948, Singapore and the 11 states of the Federation of Malacca each issued their own stamps.
