Buddy L. was founded by Fred Lundahl, who made steel toys in his spare time for his son and his son's friends.
In 1921 his company, the Moline Pressed Steel Company of East Moline, Illinois (later his son's Buddy L. nickname), began making toys full time. They made trucks, cranes, cars and trains, mostly from pressed steel, these cars, trucks and other vehicles could in fact support the weight of an adult.
In the 1930s, Buddy L used lighter steel vehicles, and in the 1940s, when war caused a shortage of available metals, the company produced toy cars and trucks from wood.
From 1976 to 1990, Richard Keats owned it, who sold it to Empire Industries of Boca Raton, Florida.
In 2000 this company went bankrupt and was (partly) sold to Gearbox Pedal Car Company, of Cedar Rapids, Iowa (later Gearbox Toys owner J. Lloyd International).

Although Buddy L vehicles of the mid-20th century and after are smaller and made with more plastic than the 1920s and 1930s models, the toy remains in production to this day.
